Brass 5 Performs at Woodrow!

On March 12th Woodrow Wilson hosted the wonderful group of musicians knows as the Brass 5, thanks to the Danville Concert Association, and Russell Scruggs. They put on a wonderful show that taught the importance of music in our everyday lives. Leprechaun Traps at Grove Park!

For the March home project, students in Mrs. Miller’s class at Grove Park were asked to make leprechaun traps with their family. Their task was to create a very colorful trap and work together with their family in hopes of trapping Shawn the Leprechaun who hides his gold inside Grove Park. On Friday, March 15th, the students each took turns sitting in the sharing chair to tell their classmates about their project. They each told us how they made their trap, who helped them, and most importantly how would it catch the leprechaun.

On Monday, March 18th, the big day had arrived to set the traps. We knew Leprechaun Shawn was at Grove Park because he left the class a letter on the Promethean Board and a treasure map to find his surprise. Students then placed their traps throughout the classroom and were off to follow the clues on the treasure map. The students worked together to solve the clues that spelled out GOLD.

Finally it was back to the classroom to check our traps. It was a grand surprise to see Leprechaun Shawn was definitely in room 8 because the room was a mess and the traps all had a special chocolate treat inside. However, that pesky little leprechaun had gotten away with his gold for another year. Maybe 2020 we’ll have better luck catching that little green leprechaun.

2nd Graders at Gibson Write Their Own Book!

Ms. Brumfield's 2nd grade class at Gibson had the opportunity to write their own book. A company called Student Treasures sent them a publishing kit. The students voted on their topic the book was going to be about, they filled out a graphic organizer, and wrote their rough drafts, went over editing rules and spelling mistakes with their teacher in small groups and wrote their final copies. The students also drew their pictures that are featured in the books.

We were so excited to send off our hard work. The publishing company sent us a video to watch showing us the steps they take to publish books. The students were very excited when the books were delivered before we left for Spring Break! A copy of our book can be found in the Gibson Library as well.
