The GWHS SCA would like to send a huge thank you to everyone for your support, attendance, and donations as they held their first ever Pancake Breakfast fundraiser that was held on February 16th! The fundraiser was a big success as members of our community, faculty, and student body joined together for this event. The food was hot and delicious. Many people have already asked us when are we going to do it again!
We have some exceptional students at GW and we should be proud of their hard work and the school pride they're exhibiting. The students worked hard, had fun, and made money! Also, our staff was very supportive. A special thank you to Ms. Klett, Mrs. Adams, Mrs. Gross, and Mr. Dodson for your tireless efforts in helping pull this off (and for being here at the crack of dawn) and to other staff members (too many to name: You know who you are!) for your monetary donations, donations of supplies, and attendance. Thanks to Mrs. Giles for your tips and guidance and for putting up with me! Also, thank you to Mr. Lancaster and administration for all your support for the SCA in our efforts in invoking more school spirit and planning activities for our student body other than just homecoming, prom, and senior picnic. After all, SCA is and should be about the students and what THEY want to do.

Westwood Middle School Band students participated in the 2019 Middle School All District Band Event. This year’s event was held at Salem High School on February 15-16. In order to participate these students had to audition against many other top band students in our district. They were selected as the top in their section. During the two day event, the students had an opportunity to meet fellow musicians and learn new band literature. At the end of the event, they performed a concert for a large audience, which included their family and friends. The students enjoyed every minute of it.
The Concert Band was under the direction of Mr. John Boyd and the Symphonic Band was under the direction of Mr. Neil S. Underwood. Westwood Middle School Band is under the direction of Mr. Demond McNair. We are very proud of how hard all of the students worked this school year to reach this goal and how far they have grown musically.
The 2019 All District Band students are as follows:
Ashley Johnson - 1st chair Symphonic Band
Braydon Goins - 2nd chair Concert Band
Jayden Price - 3rd chair Concert Band
Zeryan Williamson - 8th chair Concert Band
Jonathan Price - 2nd chair Symphonic Band

This year Schoolfield Elementary School celebrated Black History Month with daily trivia questions. Each hallway was filled with facts about famous African Americans (past and present). A question was read over the intercom each morning and the students were given a ballot each day with three choices. During the day students were given the opportunity to explore the halls in search of the answer. Prizes were given each day for all correct responses.
The PFAC also held a door decoration contest with gift cards for teachers and a pizza party for the students in those classrooms. Schoolfield would like to thank Mrs. Elam and Ms. Scott for decorating the hallways and creating the trivia questions.
First picture - Ms. Elam & Ms. Scott decorated over 100 yards of hallway to create an extraordinary display for Black History Month!
Second picture - Ms. Cassidy's 2nd grade class "reads the wall" looking for the answer to the trivia question.

Sharing the wonderful lesson the 8th grade Science teachers had with their students today. They used the force mass acceleration formula to figure out who the murderer was and the weapon they used. The students also had to figure out what position the victim was in when they were killed and their time of death. Fun time on the Murder Mystery floor!

During the month of February, George Washington High School's (GWHS) Latin Club spent the afternoon at the Foster Street Club. Members of the Latin Club planned challenging activities for members of the Club. Twenty Latin Club members participated in the visit.
GWHS Latin teacher, Aliea Lewis, challenged her Latin Club members to come up with activities for the Club kids as well as having the students lead the various activities with the Foster Club members. The Latin Club members were very engaged in hands- on activities that included building and testing catapults, making Valentine's cards, as well as having fun with a game of duck, duck, goose.
