Dual Language Camp Field Trip
Last week, EL students attended “Languisla” Dual Language Camp took a field trip to Danville Fire Station #2 to learn about our community helpers. They got to explore the station and fire trucks. They also learned about the lives of firefighters and all about fire safety. The students learned about the features on the fire truck, tools, medical supplies, gear, and learned that firefighters have many jobs aside from putting out fires! They also enjoyed a fun day in the sun “putting out fires” for Water Day. It was such a great experience that it made them “stop, drop, and roll” with excitement!

Ms. Pyles' class completes STEM PBL activity: Build a Paper Roller Coaster
Project-based learning in science encourages the use of creativity, critical thinking, communication, and teamwork skills as students work on a single project to identify and solve an overarching science question or design a solution for an engineering challenge encompassing technology, engineering, math, language arts, and other content areas.
During the Summer School Science PBL class, students construct a demo roller coaster out of paper and create the final model from card stock. Upon completion of the demo, they ask themselves several questions to help them determine what worked and what didn't work. These questions include: Did we need to lengthen or shorten anything on the roller coaster? Should the curves be more gradual and the first hill be higher? How much height is needed for the loop? Students used critical thinking skills to figure out why the marble wasn't reaching the end. By making these adjustments, students produced a great final result.
City of Danville releases tourism survey - Change is coming, help shape it!
The Danville Office of Economic Development & Tourism, the official destination marketing organization for the City of Danville and Pittsylvania County, is conducting a survey to develop plans for a regional tourism brand and marketing program. All citizens and business owners in the city and county are strongly encouraged to take part.
The tourism survey, which is open now and available at dptourismsurvey.com, includes questions that explore favorite local assets, community attributes, and citizen perceptions. This is an important effort, as the information gathered will help shape the community’s tourism story and promotional investments for years to come.
Starting Wednesday, and stretching over the next several days, every business and household in the region will receive a blue postcard inviting them to participate in this effort. The headline reads, “Change is coming, help shape it.” Citizens are encouraged to scan the provided QR code or use the URL dptourismsurvey.com to take the survey from their cell phone, tablet, or computer.
Elementary Summer School
Students in grades 3-5 participated in 2 weeks of summer school, ending on Thursday. Students worked on remediation skills for math reading and science for 5th grade students. Over the two weeks, students have worked extremely hard to close the learning gaps. On Thursday, we celebrated all their hard work with an ice cream sundae bar. Specials thanks to Perfect Pieces by Pam for sponsoring the cool treat!
Registration for Camp Cultivation is now open!
