Students get a jump start on school
From July 20 through July 30, more than 400 students in kindergarten through eighth grade participated in the Summer JumpStart program. The program was designed to preview, remediate and engage students prior to the start of the school year.
At Westwood, middle school JumpStart students engaged in mindful moments daily to adhere to the need to foster an environment that promotes social-emotional learning. During the instructional day, morning and afternoon drawings took place to enhance student engagement. These drawings were based on student responses on random topics related to the content being covered in JumpStart. Class sizes were small to allow for a focus on reading and mathematics. All supplies needed for summer school were provided to students, and students received a manipulative kit and consumable texts for math and reading.
Approximately 150 elementary JumpStart students attended Schoolfield and Park Avenue, where the emphasis was on reinforcing reading and math skills, building self confidence, and improving social and emotional development. Teachers focused on building reading skills and improving vocabulary by using Sadlier resources and improving math skills by using Moving with Math Extensions. All students were exposed to project-based learning to apply real-life experiences and deeper thinking to activities provided in class.
