Now more than ever, kids need fun, open-ended experiences that can help them build their problem-solving power and make their own creative mark on the world. That’s exactly what Camp Invention® delivered to Danville Public Schools students. The week of June 14-18, students in grades K-5, explored the world of STEM and innovation.
OPEN MIC: Children got ready to voice their ideas as they looked inside a wireless microphone and discovered the parts and pieces that inspired their invention! They amplify their ideas by using the Camp Invention Design Thinking Process™ to Identify, Explore, Sketch, Prototype, Protect, and Pitch a one-of-a-kind invention and land a deal. Inspired by unique DIY prototyping tips combined with insights from Our Nation’s Greatest Innovators™, children stepped up to the mic to share their original ideas with the world!
In Duck Chuck, children let physics fly as they launched rubber ducks to far-flung locations around the globe! They reconstructed famous landmarks and add detail. Putting trajectory, velocity, and geometry to practical use, children engineered upcycled items to invent the ultimate Duck Chucking Device. Quack Coins gave them a competitive advantage, and coupled with their new marketing skills, they fine-tuned their devices to land at the center of fun!
In Road Rally, children applied nature-based discoveries to design their own unique vehicle that morphs! They built a propeller-operated and a pulley-operated version of their vehicle to explore its capabilities on land, and then prototype features that demonstrate its abilities to morph for traveling in the air and underwater. Along the way, participants explored energy, fuel, and movement while collecting energy points to spend on special materials for their vehicles. After maximizing the dynamic morphing capabilities of their transportation designs, children participated in a Super Road Rally and take their vehicle home for continued morphing, racing, and fun!
Camp Invention Games allowed participants to practice teamwork, cooperation, and coordination skills during fun, energetic games. Creative problem-solving skills were emphasized, rather than winning or losing. Participants played and then reinvented classic games. These activities are based on the premise that, like inventions, traditional games can be modified and reimagined. Camp Invention Games encouraged strategic thinking and built 21st-century skills through physical games that enrich and energize. Participants explored out-of-the-box thinking and physical fun while playing new games and revolutionizing recess

Noblis donation helps automotive students
Scott Brann, the DPS Automotive Instructor at GW, reached out to Steve Padgett's Danville Honda and secured jobs for two automotive students. Upon hiring, the students realized there were some upfront expenses that they were not familiar with as they transitioned from high school to work. Mr. Brann reached out to the Danville Public Schools Education Foundation (DPSEF) for assistance in purchasing these items for the students. Thanks to William Franklin, DPSEF board member and Site Lead for Noblis, for contributing $525 to purchase two roll around tool boxes for our students. Because of Noblis's generous donation, our students are prepared to work! Thank you Noblis!
