Patrick Stowe and I are so excited to announce that the DPS Facebook page is now live. Please like the page and encourage others to do so. WE NEED YOUR HELP - please keep sending us great stories and photos. We love sharing those via the Friday Feature, Chalk Talk, Twitter, and now Facebook! Also, please be aware of those students in your individual schools who have "opted out" of photo releases before sending to us to post. See post analytics below - we are not even a week out and these numbers are impressive.
The 2018 Riverview Rotary Christmas Parade was held on Sunday, December 2, 2018. Members of the DPS School Board walked in the parade. In the picture below, school board member Brandon Atkins, along with Superintendent Stanley Jones, can be seen carrying the banner. The new tagline of E3+R3 can be seen on the banner. Shout out to Tia Hairston in the Instruction Department for her creativity in developing the new tagline which will be used division-wide and will align with our Strategic Plan . A video of the parade can be seen here, courtesy of River City TV.
Steve Padgett's Danville Honda is "looking for a few good men and women" with the skill-set right out of G.W.'s Automotive Program. With their latest expansion, the dealership needs to fill positions at their Danville location. Chris Graham (Parts Manager) and Brian Philpott (Master Honda Tech) asked if they could speak to the senior automotive class about career options for our students. The answer was of course "yes" especially since Chris graduated from the automotive program at G.W. 15 years ago. Mr. Padgett is interested in speaking to our school system about the possibility of a co-op. FYI, they left GW with some names and recommendations. It's looking good for automotive student placement in the community, before they even graduate in May.
Thank you to Scott Brann, Automotive Instructor at GWHS, for all your years of service and dedication to our students!

Over 100 Academically Gifted/ Accelerated Bonner students recently took a trip/tour to Washington, D.C. Four Bonner students then gave a briefing of the trip to the School Board at the December 6, 2018 meeting. Those student included:
6th grade— Jerusha Theodore and Maggie Weller
7th grade— Emily Bravo-Rodriguez
8th grade— Aniyah Tarpley
The students did an amazing job briefing the Board members about the trip and what they learned, especially in regard to DC traffic which made them late getting back to Danville. After the trip the students wrote thank you letters, learning about formal formatting and writing as well as gratitude. The first picture below is of the 6th grade class.

On November 13, 2018, the DPS LIEP Department hosted its annual World Fair for English Learners and their families. During this event students had the opportunity to display their cultural learning projects, perform on stage, and have their families participate in student created digital escape rooms. Families also participated by bringing a dish from their native country to share with others.
The Gibson Student Government Association (SGA) chose the Salvation Army Canned Food Drive as their community service project. The purpose of this canned food drive is to help families in the community have a brighter holiday by providing canned food and dry food items. The SGA, led by their president, Ty'asia Robertson, set a goal of 1,500 canned goods. The flyers used to raise awareness about their project were designed by the SGA art team. Through their efforts, E.A. Gibson Elementary was able to exceed their goal and raised 1,689 items for the canned food drive. In addition, the teachers wanted to help by raising money. Together the faculty and staff raised $166 which was donated along with the cans.

Grove Park does one service project each year so that the children have the opportunity to help others.
Grove Park will be collecting canned goods or other nonperishable items for God’s Store House during the months of November and December. This will help people in the community. The students are learning about communities in their social studies lessons.
This project will run through Friday, December 14, 2018, so that they can arrange a pick up before we get out for the winter break. Look at those smiling faces! Way to go Grove Park!

For National STEM Day, the students in Mrs. Sara Lewis' classes at Bonner took some time to create a technology invention that would help them in their daily routines at home and/or school. Using recycled items, including the boxes and packaging from the Chromebooks that were distributed to middle school students, our students were able to "up-cycle" them and create some very interesting and helpful products! Here are some pictures of their productions.
