During their regular meeting Thursday evening, the Danville School Board recognized Marcus Chaney, Lanie Davis, Patrick Stowe, and Desh Wiles for their work in launching the new Danville Public Schools website.
Under communications, the board heard the following items:
Mike Burris, the MBP Construction Consultant for the DPS renovation projects, updated the board on the progress of the projects, which include site visits, space planning, and budgeting. Interim agreements for George Washington High School and Johnson Elementary School will be presented to the board on September 15, 2022 for approval.
Chief Financial Officer Andrea Gillus presented accounts payable warrants, as well as the proposed budget calendar for FY24.
Chief Academic Officer Takiwi Babalola and Chief Operations Officer Dr. Wayne Lyle gave an update on class sizes.
Coordinator of Advanced Learning Kim Agnor presented the annual report of advanced learning, which included highlights for the 21-22 and current enrollment. Enrollment has risen more than 100 students over last year to 398 students.
Babalola gave an update on the Corrective Action Plan, in which she announced that two Essential Actions and 10 Action Items relating to special education have been completed and closed. This means that DPS has the internal capacity to operate programs without oversight. Congratulations to Dr. Tia Hairston and her team!
Director of Assessment and State Reporting Dr. Melissa Newton presented the 21-22 SOL pass rates, as released by the Virginia Department of Education on Thursday.
Board Member Dr. Philip Campbell held a first reading of policy updates for Sections I and E.
The board took the following actions:
Approved personnel recommendations brought forward by Chief Human Resources Officer Dr. Natalie Halloran.
Approved the 22-23 Crisis Plan and the Annual Review of the Crisis Plan brought forward by Director of Safety and Security Jeff McLaughlin.
Approved the June 2022 Finance Report brought forward by Gillus.
Approved changes to the approved 22-24 calendars brought forward by Newton.
Approved the 22-23 textbook budget brought forward by Babalola.
Approved the members of the Gifted Education Advisory Council brought forward by Agnor.
Approved the administrative appointment of Lesa Shelton as the Principal of Woodberry Hills Elementary School.
Approved the authorization of Andrea Gillus to sign weekly warrants, letters, and other necessary financial documents effective September 1, 2022 and until the Board elects a new clerk and deputy clerk at its annual reorganization meeting in January 2023.
Approved the retirement of the following policies: Policy 2200 - Guidance and Counseling Program, Policy 5300 - Daily Observance of the One Minute of Silence, 5200 - Emergency Closings, and Policy 3066 - Homeless. All are covered in other approved policies.
Director of Services for Exceptional Children Dr. Tia Hairston and her team were recognized during Thursday's meeting for closing two Essential Actions in the district's Corrective Action Plan.
Elementary Renovation Feedback Meetings
Starting next week and into the fall, we will be having feedback sessions for students, parents, and the community for input on the upcoming construction projects at each school listed below.
Woodberry Hills on August 24 at 6 p.m.
Forest Hills on September 8 at 5:30 p.m.
Park Avenue on September 28 at 6 p.m.
Gibson on October 12 at 6 p.m.

Fill the Truck 2022
Today, the Danville Fire Department dropped off school supplies, clothing, and personal hygiene items collected during their annual Fill the Truck event. These supplies will go to our students who have identified needs. Thank you to the Danville Fire Department for continuing this initiative, and thank you to everyone who donated during the event.

Painting hats at RISE Academy
Principal Sonya Lawrence and students at RISE painted hats this week as a part of their VTSS program. If students have followed rules and engaged in their academic lessons during the week, on Friday afternoon, they can complete activities as a reward. These students wanted to paint they original designs on baseball hats. Other students this week chose to also play basketball.
Mrs. Medlin's sixth grade math class completes a skittles activity while learning about about ratios.
To wrap up a lesson on citizenship, students in Coach Snead’s Civic & Economics class recited The Oath of Allegiance at Westwood Middle School!
Gibson Donation

Music Class at Gibson
Students learned the Musical Alphabet and played it on their mini xylophones. They also played “Mary Had A Little Lamb” and “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”.
At Woodberry Hills, Mrs. Jasko's kindergarteners learn to think like mathematicians thanks to the Dreambox computer program.
Mrs. Jasko's students learn about number order by working on their class promethean board.
Learning Spanish at Bonner
Spanish classes at Bonner Middle spent some time this week writing basic conversations using sequential mapping and flow charts with new vocabulary.
Second Graders in Mrs. Przybyl Brown's class at Woodberry Hills take notes about force and motion in Science class.
Early College Program students present vision boards to administrators before starting their college classes on Monday.
