OEC FIELD DAY
On Thursday, April 28, the Office for Exceptional Children held their Field Day at Dan Daniel Park. There were 134 student athletes, 108 student buddies, 94 volunteers, and 50 staff members present. Activities included inflatables, sack racing, parachute games, music, and more! We thank Dr. Tia Hairston for organizing this amazing event! We also thank our community sponsors: the Danville Public Schools Education Foundation, KG Graphics, North Main Baptist Church, Chick-Fil-A of Danville, Friends of the OEC, Sellers Insurance Agency, Office Plus Business Centre, St. Luke's United Methodist Church Circle #3, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, PATHS Inc, and Hillcrest Men's Group.
Middle School Boys Soccer Team wins district
On April 28, the GW Middle School Boys Soccer Team (comprised of Bonner and Westwood students) won their game against Halifax County Middle School, making them Junior Piedmont District Champions! Congratulations, team and coaches!
GW students win at NC trade show
GW Virtual Enterprise students had an extraordinary performance at the NC trade show. Though students were unable to compete at our yearly International Global Competition in New York, we were able to compete among North Carolina schools in person and submit competitions online for global competitions. Students were able to demonstrate their unique concepts in business, marketing, and entrepreneurship skills. Students constructed a 1st place company booth and displayed superb salesmanship.

Science of Sound at Park Avenue
Park Avenue 5th graders have explored the Science of Sound during Music class. They completed “Vibration Stations” to learn and create more with vibrations and sound waves. Stations included a water glass pitch matching challenge, making slinky sound waves, a plastic drum head experiment with different tension and materials to observe how molecules move with sound, a vibration exploration station with various objects to create sounds with, and a rubber band box ukulele station.
Make Danville Shine
May is Make Danville Shine month, and we are encouraging everyone to adopt a project with a focus on doing just that! In school or out, we hope everyone takes the opportunity to show care for our shared community. As a part of this annual campaign, the Public Works Department of Danville is waiving several fees and restrictions regarding yard waste, large bulk debris, tire disposal, and appliance pickups. GWHS student takes part in All Virginia Band event
Last weekend, O'majeo Grizzle, a George Washington High School Senior, took part in the All Virginia Concert Band event as a Contrabass clarinet player. He joined a band of 108 of some of the best high school musicians in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Mr. Grizzle had the opportunity to work under the conductor Dr. T. Andre Feagin from Central Washington University. On Saturday April 23, during their concert the students played a program of challenging works, including a wonderful piece called "Come Sunday" by Omar Thomas. The band also had the privilege to make the world premiere of "Commonwealth Fanfare" by Carl Holmquist.
O'Majeo Grizzle is the first student to make the All Virginia Band from GWHS since 2016.
Upcoming Mental Health First Aid training
Mental Health First Aid teaches about recovery and resiliency – the belief that individuals experiencing these challenges can get better and use their strengths to stay well. Danville Public Schools and Danville Pittsylvania Community Services (DPCS) are offering training this summer. Training Dates are:

**July 30
*all blended meaning 2 hours of prework online, then the instructor led session is in person.
**Virtual; 2 hours of prework online then instructor-led session is via Zoom, but participants are REQUIRED to have their camera and microphone on for the duration of the class to receive the certification.

Kindergartners at Woodberry Hills are doing research with text in hand. We are learning all about plants from different resources! We will plant a seed and write down our observations as it grows!

Last week, Gibson held their Third Quarter academic growth and increased attendance celebration with snow cones for students!
Learning the keyboard at Grove Park
Mr. Grant Poole gives a music lesson to some of his youngest learners. The Grove Park Preschool children are having fun making music on the keyboards.
5th Grade Science Expo at Gibson
On Friday, April 22nd 5th grade students participated in a science expo. This event took place to prepare students for the Virginia Standards of Learning assessment taking place in May. Students traveled around the gym to different exhibits with hands-on learning activities for specific standards. Students learned about mixtures and solutions, planets, rocks, photosynthesis and solids, liquids and gases. Students did not just hear the information, they engaged in the process of learning the information. "When children are having fun they want to be involved and the learning naturally occurs." A special thank you to all of our presenters including: Ms. McCraw, Mrs. Scott, Dr. Norton, Dr. Price, Mr. Hughes, Ms. Sultzer, Ms. Fitzgerald, Ms. Williams, Ms. Lewis, Coach Eman, and Mr. Marsh.
Administrative Professionals Day at GW
Wednesday was Administrative Assistant's Day, and GW celebrated by giving their staff flowers, pastries, and Chick-fil-A gift cards. Thank you for all you do!
Preschool students learn rain sounds
The children at Grove Park and Northside Preschools have been learning about rain storms this month in music class. Discussions included how the wind pushes clouds, rain clouds are usually darker in color, and the sky gets dark when thunderstorms approach. The children then explored ways to make rain sounds with body percussion, drums, and Orff xylophones and metallophones.
Westwood teachers help with tennis camp
On April 23 and 24, two of Westwood Middle School’s teachers helped host a tennis camp for over 40 children in the Southside Va. area. As board members of the non-profit organization Troy Nation, Amber Spencer and LaKisha Brandon advocate for youth athletes by providing opportunities for them to participate in free sports camps to level the playing field so that financial barriers aren't an issue. The Troy Nation tennis camp was free to youth ages 7 to 14. Campers were provided with free t-shirts, snacks, and tennis instruction provided by the Troy Nation organization. Amber Spencer and Lakisha Brandon are active board members of Troy Nation and play an important role in their community to advocate and build opportunities for its youth.
Danville Bulldogs wrap up first season
Congratulations to Coach Antoine Morris and the Danville Bulldogs 7 on 7 team in their first year of competition. The bulldogs are made up of kids from GW Bonner and Westwood as well as others around the Pittsylvania Danville area. The Bulldogs have participated in tournaments in Winston-Salem and Charlotte. Thanks Bulldogs for representing Danville at a high level.
Also, congratulations to Jay Perdue and Cody Perdue who are also volunteering with the Burlington Bulls 7 0n 7 team which also has several Danville players participating. The Bulls have won two Tournaments this year. Both the Bulls and the Bulldogs played against Cam Newton’s teams. DPS student football players on both teams are getting a lot of exposure.

Schoolfield Attendance Incentive
Schoolfield students were awarded for having daily, on-time attendance. Students were entered into a raffle and 10 names were drawn. Students received a poster of their choice as their prize. Students love the attendance incentive and look forward to the Friday announcements for the winners to claim their prizes. Go Jaguars!
Family Night at Gibson
Our Gibson Families joined us Thursday night for Community Giveaway and pizza dinner, along with our Living Wax Museum. Families were able to receive numerous household items, food and so much more- all FREE of cost. A huge thank you to God's Final Call and Warning for sponsoring this event for our bulldogs. Councilman Bryant Hood joined us to present a proclamation from Governor Glenn Younkin to Mr. Twyman of God's Final Call and Warning. We love our Community Partnerships!
Autism Spirit Week at Schoolfield
Schoolfield students participated in a different theme each day this week to promote Autism Awareness throughout our school. Weekly highlights included students and staff showcasing their bright, brilliant minds by wearing neon colors. Jaguars wore tie-dye on Tuesday to show that “We all blend together,” and mismatched clothes on Thursday to show that “Everyone’s different, not less.” Today, Schoolfield Jaguars are finishing the week strong by wearing team jerseys, and Schoolfield colors as a friendly reminder to always work as a T.E.A.M. Together Everyone Achieves More!
Living Wax Museum at Gibson
E.A. GIbson hosted a “Living Wax Museum'' for 4th grade students to showcase their research in the classroom. The students displayed their hard work in an exciting and hands-on way! The students selected a variety of historical figures throughout the history of Virginia and created displays, skits, and other presentations. The exhibits presented by students during the Wax Museum aligned with the Virginia Curriculum Framework for Virginia Studies and featured historical figures in Virginia history. Some key historical figures include: Abraham Lincoln, Pocahontas, Nat Turner, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Rosa Parks, and Clara Barton. A total of 143 families participated in this event! Go Bulldogs!
Super Students at Schoolfield
Schoolfield Super-Students were nominated by their teachers for April. The students pictured come to school each day ready to learn, they are respectful, and are always responsible. These students were recognized at Schoolfield’s April PTA meeting. We are “Number 1!” Go Jaguars!
Bonner holds poetry cafe paint night
Heather Bray, Art Teacher at Bonner Middle School, hosted the inaugural Poetry Cafe Paint Night on Thursday, April 28, 2022. This Family Engagement Event was structured to align with Reading and Math SOLS.
Gibson students learn about measurement
Gibson 1st graders are learning about measurement, VA SOL 1.10. Students began their lesson about length by measuring school administration staff. Ms. King's class traced and measured Mrs. Logan to see just how long she was. Math is so much fun!
