The Start on Success (SOS) interns from George Washington High School visited the United Rubber Workers (URW) Credit Union on Wednesday, March 20, 2019. This is a work based learning experience for these students who are ready to continue life lessons.
Chris Simmons, VP of Lending, at the Lowes Branch was enthusiastic about sharing his wisdom in financial matters with our interns. He took the students on a tour of the entire facility, stopping by every office explaining what their job responsibilities are and how they all relate to each other.
Interns: Zion Ferrell, Jasmine Gentry, Joshua Batts
Special thanks to URW!

Friday, March 22, 2019 was the official 2019 Reality Store event. Daniel Hale, the local 4-H agent, came to spend one day with each 6th grade Science teacher to prepare the students for the official Reality Store.
In the prep sessions, he allowed students to discuss life skills budgeting (for example rent, utilities, child care, communications, etc.). Each student at the end of the session was given a "life scenario" in which they had to then act out for the day of the actual Reality Store. Some examples were single with no children, a technical engineer and makes $3,250 per month, or married with two children (ages 6 months and 2 years) with a spouse that does not work and total monthly income is $2,875. There were over 100 different scenarios students could get. While going through the Reality Store, students have to take their budget and purchase a car, housing, communications, groceries, utilities, and other such life skills.
The conversations were eye-opening for the students and they really began to understand how budgeting will help keep them in a good place financially. We take it a step further to discuss how the decisions they are making today are shaping their futures. If they want to be successful in the future, they need to make good decisions today -- academically, relationships, and other such ways.

“I believe that teacher and student stress underlie a lot of our problems with learning,” said Curry School professor Patricia Jennings. “If we want to improve our test scores, then let’s all calm down.”
To that end, Jennings has spent more than a decade working with colleagues on a 30-hour mindfulness-based professional development program for teachers called CARE (Cultivating Awareness and Resilience in Education). As part of the training, stretched across several weeks, teachers explore the cognitive and physical links to their emotions in order to better regulate them, and they role-play stressful classroom situations to practice mindful responses. On Monday, April 1st, George Washington High School welcomed home a former Eagle, Danielle Jeffers, to speak to the juniors and seniors about her program Dough 4 Degrees. When Danielle was getting ready to start her journey at VA Tech, she was awarded over $100,000 in scholarships that she had applied for and each semester she received a refund check averaging around $8,000. Danielle took the time to speak with many of our students and has offered to help many of them through the assistance of her company to find ways to pay for college without taking out a large student loan.
