On most quizzes, exams, and the final, you will need to show your work for credit. These assignments are timed. That means you will have a specified amount of time to upload your work once you begin an assignment. You will see in our Canvas course that these assignments involve a two-step process. A typical upload assignment would look like this:
For example, Quiz 1, an assignment which you will need to show your work, requires that you
Click on Quiz 1. Your time only starts when you click on Begin. A list of questions will show up. You'd work on these questions on a piece of paper. Write neatly and legibly because you will need to upload it. Save 5 to 10 minutes to take pictures of your work and turn them into one single pdf file. Upload the pdf file. Then hit Submit.
You then go back to the weekly module and click on Upload Quiz 1 Here Again. This second upload is worth 1 point (Complete or Incomplete), counts towards your Participation grade. If you missed the first submission deadline, the quiz submission window is closed. Use this accompanying assignment item to submit your quiz for late consideration.
Scanning your work in pdf format (taking pictures of your work and combining them into one single pdf file) and uploading it would take some time and practice. A late penalty will be added for any late work. Because of this, it is important that you practice taking pictures and combining them into one single pdf file, see below. With any upload, it is recommended that you optimize the file size. It might take a while to upload a large pdf file (in some cases, such large file won't be uploaded at all).
A quick google search on how to combine images/pages into one single pdf file yields many results:
What happens if you got locked out of your quiz?
As long as you submit your quiz/exam the second time within 2 minutes when your time is up, then it is acceptable. I have access to the time stamps of your submissions. Remember the second submission has no restriction (other than the due date). To avoid other issues such as bad internet connection, please only start the timed assignment when you're ready to do so.
What if you submit it more than 2 minutes after your time is up?
Then I only grade your first submission. And if you did not submit it the first time and it takes you more than 2 minutes to submit the second time, then it is considered late. Please refer to your syllabus for late work policy.
Can you change your answers in the second submission?
No. The work on the second submission must be the same as the first. Do not try to outsmart your instructor. Academic integrity is strictly enforced. Your instructor can access a lot of your online activities in details, sometimes more than you know of yourself.
What is the purpose of submitting the same file twice?
There are several. One is 'quality control'. It is to make sure that you successfully submitted your work. Often time students email the instructor and ask if their work is submitted. There is no need to do so if you uploaded it twice and have confirmations on both submissions. Another reason is that to enforce academic integrity in an online course, instructors need to give timed assignments (just like you would take the quiz and exam in a face-to-face class -- they are timed!). As of now, Canvas only has time restriction settings in Quiz format (your first submission). However, your instructor cannot annotate your work in the first submission with a tablet and a stylus (Notes that instructors can view your first submission and annotate it by typing, but with a math class, it is preferred that we annotate your work by hand writings). To compensate for your cooperation with this extra work, the second submission is counted as your participation. And in an online class, participation = attendance. It is required
