Welcome to Fall 2022!

Welcome to my CCSF homepage!

It is my privilege to teach many courses here at City College! This page will tell you a bit about each.

Below you will find information on the courses I teach.

But first, allow me to introduce myself,

I'm Lou Schubert. I love teaching and teaching politics is (almost always) a pleasure. The ideas, the debates, the entertainment of watching as society tries to figure out what to do is endlessly fascinating to me.

My doctorate is from the University of Southern California; My dissertation was on National Security and the Environment looking at the United States as a case study. I was well-trained in graduate school to teach across the Political Science discipline. My doctoral major was American Politics and my minors (figure like a Master's degree worth) were Political Theory and Comparative Politics. Since my dissertation was on national security that gave me a ton on International Relations as well. The environmental focus taught me public policy and of course environmental politics.

I teach classes on all these here at CCSF, along with an American Studies course called "Comics, Power and Society" because I'm a comic geek since forever, as well as "Terrorism and Counterterrorism" in our Administration of Justice department, because that subject fascinates me.

Fortunately, I ended up in San Francisco teaching an amazing student body about fun and interesting things. Ain't life grand?

Prof. Schubert's Classes:

Many of you may have arrived on this page because of the link in the schedule for my online section of American Government (Political Science 1). The technical details are already there, like we are a slightly shorter-term class of 16 weeks and that it takes place on software called Canvas. The content is the same as the live, in-person classes, only asynchronous and online, but with similar pacing. My goal is to replicate the in-person class experience as best I could, despite the whole not being in the same room together.

My classes:

POLS 1 American Government (Fall 2022)

Exactly what it sounds like. A new country or same old same old? We find out in live time. A specific requirement for CSU transfer (for which you also need US History). Areas D&F. Required for the major.

POLS 3 Political Theory (Fall 2022)

Prof. Schubert: This is my toughest class, and I make it tougher to prepare you for the level of work expected once you transfer to UC. It's also really fun and fascinating! Be prepared for a serious work load. (Bonus Hint: Read Plato's Republic over break) Area D. Required for the major.

POLS 5 International Relations (Fall 2022)

The relations between countries, focusing on international relation theories and key topics like war, terrorism, and environment. It's trying to use theories to understand the chaotic world in which we live. Area D. Required for the major.

POLS22 Environmental Politics and Policy (Fall 2022)

Pretty descriptive. This class looks at the politics and policymaking process on environmental issues in the US, Comparatively, and in International Relations, It also looks at ecopolitical theory. It spends about a quarter of the course each on the four main subfields of Political Science (American, Comparative, International Relations and Political Theory) and serves as an introduction to all. Area D. Elective for the major.

Other classes, not in Fall 2022 but coming soon! (These are not offered every semester but every 2 or 3).

POLS 12 Ethnic Politics in the US (Spring 2021)

This course surveys the role of race and ethnicity in American politics. Theories of race, identity, and ethnic political patterns are explored for African Americans, Asians Americans, Latino/a Americans, and European Americans. Areas D and H. Elective for the Political Science major and Social Justice Studies: Ethnic Studies degree.

POLS 45 Middle East Government and Politics (Spring 2022)

Exactly what it says: Governments and Politics of the Middle East, a comparative politics survey of the nations of the region, from monarchies to democracies, The focus is on domestic politics. Area D. Elective for the Political Science major. Required for the Critical Middle East/South-West Asia and North Africa Studies major.
