This course examines traditional and contemporary characteristics of the Filipino family with an emphasis on the impact of colonialism on family dynamics in the Philippines and Filipino communities in the diaspora. Other issues to be discussed in the context of the Filipino family include emigration and immigration, belief systems and faith, the evolution of cultural values, intergenerational conflict, colonial mentality, colorism, sexuality, gender identities, and transnationalism.
This course fulfills requirements for CCSF GE Areas D, CSU GE Area D and IGETC Area 4. UC/CSU transferable.
This course meets requirements for the following degrees: Asian Americans Studies AA-T; Social Justice Studies: Ethnic Studies AA-T; Critical Pacific Island and Oceania Studies AA; Social Sciences and Behavioral Sciences AS. This is a core course for the Associates of Arts Degree in Philippine Studies and the Certificate of Achievement in Philippine Studies.

The lectures are presented in Canvas either as written content or videos. Assignments and projects will be submitted online. Discussions will be facilitated through Canvas; Asynchronous individual and group work will be completed using Google Docs, Slides, and Padlet. During synchronous meetings we will use the following apps to facilitate interaction: GoogleDocs, GoogleSlides, Kahoot, and Padlet. Depending on public health restrictions, there may be a few [optional] opportunities to get together.
