Hi, everyone. I'm Michele Alaniz, the instructor in this course. Please take a moment to watch this brief video and learn a little bit about me. This syllabus contains some information on what you can expect to learn in this course and what you will need to get started. Please take a look and let me know if you have any questions.
Addresses major foundations, access, technology and reference competencies for library support staff. Surveys historical and contemporary resources and the functions and organization of libraries. Emphasis on catalogs, databases, and the evaluation and documentation of resources.
It is recommended that enrolled students be at MABS 60 level or higher.
Interpret and apply classification systems
Locate, use, and cite appropriate information resources for research
Evaluate information resources based on standard qualitative criteria
Describe basic library resources and systems
Compare career paths in library services
This is a 16-week, late start fully online course that begins on August 30, 2021. The course will be visible and available in Canvas on that day
There are 2 required textbooks. Other required readings will be included in our course modules in Canvas.
You will learn in a community with your peers. This is not a self-paced course.
This class does not meet regularly in Zoom. Your learning will be conducted asynchronously (which means "not live") in Canvas.
By Friday of Week 1, you will be expected to log-in to our course in Canvas and participate in the Meet & Greet discussion forum to signal your intent to complete this course.
This class is organized into one-week modules that begin each Monday morning. However, I open the modules a few days early on Saturday mornings to provide some flexibility.
Each module contains readings, videos, activities and assessments (e.g. assignments, quizzes, discussion forums). A detailed course schedule will be provided in Canvas.
