My name is Robert Perrone, I have an undergraduate degree in Bioscience. I am currently in the New York NOYCE STEAM pipeline program at Adelphi University to begin my career in teaching.
I find learning more effective when paired with hands on and creative projects, and believe this journal will have a strong positive influence in my classrooms.
Used materials provided by our professor to build a machine inspired by amusement park swings.
My classmates and I collaborated, using motors, light, cardboard and a plastic bottle to create our swing set.
3D design in Tinkercad
I used inspiration from vinyl dolls to connect shaped and objects in Tinkercad. At first the program seemed frustrating but with some practice I quickly grasped the controls and was able to design my own Vinyl doll. We were then able to share our 3D models in CoSpaces, an easily manageable, interactive, virtual world.
Using physical computing we were able to make hidden technology visible, and tangible. E-textiles can effectively teach electronic concepts through craft. I enjoyed using conductive material, fabric, and circuits to create designs that allowed the incorporation of technology. With the importance of technology in modern day designing and engineering this activity shows the endless possibilities of physical computing.
This was my first time coding and first time using java but the video tutorial really helped. I was able to follow along and then venture out a bit on my own by playing around with some codes. I can see using coding in Biology class in a couple of ways like letting students create their own diagrams, maybe of a cell, using p5.js. I think this activity would really imprint the placement of organelles within the cells for the students because they would have to put a lot of focus into the placement and shapes of their diagram. A more simple use of coding in biology would be to compare the coding being used by students in p5.js with the coding in genes. This can create a connection that genetic material, like codes, produce different outcomes and an error in the code can mean no proteins are being synthesized.

p5.js is a JavaScript library for creative coding, with a focus on making coding accessible and inclusive for artists, designers, educators, beginners, and anyone else!
Podcast: The Silence and the Presence of Everything by Gordan Hempton (link)
Gordan studies acoustic ecology, he speaks about the importance of sound in nature. Silence is rare in modern day and must be protected.
When I walked through Eisenhower park the presence of noise pollution was unavoidable. I tuned into the sounds around me and appreciated the sounds of nature that can be heard.
The Underground Sound Project - Collection of underground sound recordings by artist Nikki Lindt in Prospect Park
I used Chibitronic sticker LED lights, paper circuits, paint, and poetry, other artistic mediums to interpret and reflect my walk in the park.
Links- Different conductive materials , Resources for working with copper tape
I was able to explore with and utilize different types of circuits, switches, and conductive materials in order to create a proper visualization of my experience.
Here in This Place: Eisenhower Park
In this place there once was tall grass,
birds flew above the grass.
The sun shone above all.
Now, in this place there is music filling the air,
humans lay upon the grass.
The sun is shining above all.
In the future I imagine that in this place there will be tall trees,
art will cover the trees.
The sun will shine.
In order to incorporate the sounds of my walk I created a storytelling instrument using Makey Makey. The Makey Makey circuit board allowed me to program my sound files to play on an instrument of choice. I created a record player, this connects with my experience walking in the park because I heard music from a concert going on. The record player symbolizes the changing of times from before the area was a park and was just a plain of grassland. Nowadays we don't see record players often but many people still appreciate the authenticity of the music from a vinyl record.
