Assumed the responsibilities of a general education Kindergarten teacher serving learners of varying needs.
Promoted a nurturing learning environment and respectful classroom community through explicit instruction and/ or modeling of values such as care, accountability, responsibility, and lifelong learning.
Planned and implemented lessons utilizing multiple curriculums and programs such as the Mineola Integrated Curriculum, Fundations, Math Expressions, and RethinkEd which were data-driven and responsive to assessment.
Encouraged a strong school and home connection with learners and their families through consistent communication via applications such as Remind and ClassDojo as well as in-person and virtual conferences.
Participated in multiple Committees on Special Education and implemented the established plans, tracking trends found in data collection to monitor learner progress and eventually modify.
This leave replacement in Kindergarten was my first time having a class on my own! I grew not only as an educator but as a person while working with these learners.
As a PLC, our grade-level goal was to improve writing among all learners. Utilizing the Mineola Integrated Curriculum, Fundations, and various supplementary applications, writing scores increased at least twofold for every learner in my class when comparing September to January scores!
This has truly been the most rewarding and transformative experience of my career thus far. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for both these learners and myself as an educator!
Hampton Street School and Jackson Avenue School, August 2021 - Present
Participated in a year-long residency immersion program which constituted student teaching and responsibilities of a full-time teacher (professional development, conferences, and action research).
Collaborated with and learned from experienced 2nd grade (Fall) and 4th grade (Spring) mentor teachers in dual language classrooms (English and Spanish) to produce, facilitate, assess, and reflect on lessons in all subject areas within Childhood, Early Childhood, and TESOL.
Conducted action research on the effectiveness of native language use in one-to-one direct instruction on English vocabulary acquisition of entering and emerging 4th graders, with results showing positive learner outcomes.
My Teacher Work Sample focused on an Integrated ELA unit reading The Wild Robot Escapes. The main goal was preparing learners to independently conduct the roles in Book Clubs, therefore I focused instruction each week of the four-week unit on a different role. Each role utilizes a literacy skill: Questioning, Vocabulary-Building, Visualizing, and Summarizing.
2nd Grade at Hampton St. with Mrs. Ekloff and Ms. Sunjka's Learners
4th Grade at Jackson Ave. with Ms. LaMantia and Mrs. Ramirez's Learners
Facilitating whole class, small group, and one-on-one learning in both placements
Discussing concepts, making connections, and building learners' vocabulary repertoire in 2nd grade
When I began my placement in January, the 4th grade learners in Ms. LaMantia's class were working on writing personal Memoirs. Ms. LaMantia explained to me that she wanted to have the learners share their Memoirs as a celebration of their writing accomplishments. Together, we created the Memoir Café! To share their Memoirs, I created a "Menu" for our Café linked to a QR code on their very own "travel mugs" that they could take home to share with their loved ones. When scanned, the QR code brings you to our "Menu" of all the learners' writing pieces!
