MHS German Club
The MHS German Club is sponsored by Mahopac's chapter of the National German Honor Society. Honor Society students show a commitment to German as a discipline, to their academics in general and to going beyond MHS to connect to the larger German-speaking world .
MHS German Club activities are open to all students at MHS. Check out some highlights below! We are proud of our partnership with the German American Social Club in Putnam Valley, the Goethe Institut in NYC, the American Association of Teachers of German, and our very active members. We fund most of our activities through our annual Advent Calendar Sale as well as by generous grants from outside German cultural and educational organizations.
We welcome you to reach out to our advisers, Frau Bauerlein and Mr. Gillespie with any questions.

Bundesliga Total, an international soccer competition
MHS is one of two North American schools featured in this Goethe Institut video promoting their international soccer competition, Bundesliga Total. Featured are the students in MHS's College German Class with personal interviews by Juniors Jasmine Merrill and Oliva Meyer. At the end, you can also see footage from a our private tour of the FC Bayern Munich office in NYC this fall featuring MHS juniors Sydney Froehlich, Anna Gamgebeli and Austin Kuhbier. Check it out! Opportunities like this are just one more reason to #JustAddGerman! ⚽️
Do you have German heritage? Are you looking to major in science or engineering? Maybe you love German soccer or just want to travel easily in Europe. There are tons of great reasons to learn German, but every student has his or her own. Let some of our Mahopac students tell you why they decided to study German in this video!
MHS students were thrilled to be a part of the 51st annual Steuben Day Parade for our very first time in September of 2017. We were thankful to be awarded a stipend from the parade organizers to help offset the cost of our transportation to the City and we are grateful to MHS Junior and Vice President of the German Club Sydney Froehlich for organizing our participation. Danke, Sydney! We invite all alumni and parents to march with us next time on Saturday, September 15, 2018.
Deutsch macht Spass!
In December, German Club members traveled to the MS to sponsor two German Language Hours to bring German culture, language and food alive for some MMS students. In addition to organizing most of the activities and setting the German menu each week, MHS Senior and German Club Secretary Tyler Marquez won a grant from the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) to fund this project, which meant we could offer it for free for all interested MMS students. Danke, Tyler and all our HS volunteers!
Abschlussfeier, our annual year-end celebration
At the end of each school year, all the members of our MHS German family gather together at the German-American Social Club in Putnam Valley for our annual Abschlussfeier to celebrate a year of exciting events and opportunities. In addition to enjoying some fantastic German delicacies such as Schnitzel and Kaesespaetzle, we honor students who have won national awards, induct new members into the National German Honor Society, install our new Club officers, and bid farewell to our seniors. Click here for a look at the Abschlussfeier slideshow from 2017.
We are also grateful for the support of local organizations and individuals who donate financial awards for seniors who have dedicated their time and talent to promoting German language in culture for five years.
Gingerbread House Competition
Each year, the MHS German Club
sponsors a Gingerbread House
Competition. Teams of students
compete in two categories,
Traditional and Creative, and a
winner and runner-up is chosen for each.
Participation is free, but teams contribute
non-perishable food items
to be donated to St. John's Food Pantry.
Click here to check out a photo spread from the 2017 competition in the Mahopac News!
The MHS German Club sponsors
the Kinderzelt, or Children's Tent,
at the German American Social Club's
annual Oktoberfest each September.
We facilitate kids' activities,
including a sand art table, face painting,
arts & crafts, games, and more!
