Different regions of China fought for control of the country. One state emerged victorious from this struggle, the state of Qin which is pronounced 'chin' and gives China its name. The general who conquered the other states and led Qin to victory was Qin Shi Huangdi (First Emperor).
The Great Wall was originally built by the Qin Dynasty and following dynasties continued to work on it. It is an ancient series of walls and fortifications located in northern China. It is more then 13, 000 miles in length.
The wall was built to help keep out northern invaders like the Mongols. Smaller walls had been built over the years, but the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, decided that he wanted a single giant wall to protect his northern borders. He ordered that a single strong wall be built with thousands of lookout towers where soldiers could guard and protect his empire.
The famous Chinese general Meng Tian initially directed the most ambitious project ever to be undertaken by any civilisation. He used a massive army of soldiers, convicts and commoners as workers. It is said that as many as 400,000 people died during the wall's construction, many of these workers were buried within the wall itself.
Today, the Great Wall is generally recognised as one of the most impressive architectural creations in human history. In 1987, UNESCO designated the Great Wall a World Heritage site. Over the years, roads have been cut through the wall in various points, and many sections have deteriorated after centuries of neglect.
