Magnet schools thrive in district environments that support innovative school choice options with purpose and intentionality. Overcoming obstacles of policy, politics, and public opinion is key to magnet school success. Join one district in a rear-view mirror analysis of the road to creating shared vision and a windshield view of next action steps to foster the conditions for innovation. An exploration of the role of the design process applied to defining school autonomy, district and community support, differentiated accountability, and process development will give participants the opportunity to learn from the successes and pitfalls of another district’s journey.
Deborah Elder
Executive Director, Office of Innovation & School Choice, Albuquerque Public Schools, NMDeborah Elder serves as Executive Director of Innovation, charged with developing new programs and schools of choice within the district. She brings to the Office of Innovation a commitment to develop personalized learning experiences for students; overcome obstacles to achieve a vision of innovation in education; and ensure equity through rigorous learning for all students. In addition to designing, developing and implementing new programs and schools of choice, Mrs. Elder oversees the APS Charter Schools Office, which supports 20 district-authorized charter schools in Albuquerque. Mrs. Elder’s expertise has been shared in multiple national venues, from presentations at the Learning Forward Annual Conference to designing and implementing professional development for principals at the Discovery Education Principal’s Symposium around transforming school culture for digital age learning. She received the Southwest Branch of the International Dyslexia Association’s Leadership in Literacy Award in 2009, and Zuni received recognition in 2011 for the commitment to parent and community involvement from Leadership Albuquerque.
Franchesca Ver Plough
Senior Director, Office of Innovation & School Choice, Albuquerque Public Schools, NMMs. Ver Ploegh is the Senior Director of Innovation for Albuquerque Public Schools, where she leads a staff engaged in delivering and fostering innovative practices in the Albuquerque Public Schools Engineering the Future K-12 pathway at Mission Elementary, Garfield Middle School and Valley High School funded by MSAP. The Design Thinking Process is the core feature in defining and developing a rigorous, innovative and collaborative climate for students to thrive. Ms. Ver Ploegh has 17 previous years of experience as a Biology Science Teacher, and Elementary School Principal of a large urban school that focused on STEM education.
