This panel research session will provide three perspectives of magnet research by renown Magnet Researcher (Dr. Amy Hawn Nelson), to applied research from a Superintendent of Schools and previous Magnet Director (Dr. Kim Morrison), and a principal (Shandra Scott-Brown) of a theme-based CREC Museum School, CT. Moderators are two founders of Magnet Schools of America (Dr. Robert G. Brooks and Dr. Gladys Pack), co-author editors of “Magnet Schools: Public Schools of Choice in a Changing Education Landscape.” 2021 edition.
Shandra Scott-Brown holds a Masters degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Scranton in Scranton PA. A Master’s degree in Educational Technology from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA, and a Bachelor degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Early Childhood from the Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, FL. Mrs. Scott-Brown holds professional educator certifications in Connecticut Intermediate Administration/Supervision PreK-12 and Elementary Education (K-6).
Mrs. Scott-Brown has served as a Connecticut Public School educator for the past 23 years in several capacities. She started her career as a Certified Teacher (K-5) and later became an Instructional Coach (PreK-8). This year marks her eleventh year as principal of CREC Museum Academy Magnet School, where she is an integral part of the museum studies theme. With her strong vision for a new and creative future for the school, Mrs. Scott-Brown believes that Museum Academy fosters independent thinking in a challenging museum-based environment where curriculum content is infused with the arts, museum partnerships, and other museum methodologies.
Under her strong leadership, CREC Museum Academy has earned several awards from Magnet Schools of America, a nationally recognized organization. CREC Museum Academy was awarded the Magnet School of America Presidents Award 2015, Magnet School of Excellence 2015 as well as the Magnet School of Distinction award 2017, 2016, 2014, and 2013. These honors were achieved within four short years of becoming an accredited Magnet School.
