Irene Lemon

Artist Biography

Irene Lemon is a multi-artform performing artist, and she has toured extensively across regional and remote communities for over 20 years.

Irene also has over 15 years’ experience coordinating community arts projects including internationally with AusAID in Pacific Nations, and a robust grant writing freelance consultancy which has secured over 40MIL for her clients.

Irene is a NSW Department of Industry Business Connect Creative Industries Business Advisor, contracted through Creative Plus Business to deliver one-on-one advisory sessions and workshops for regional artists and creative industry start-ups. She has also advised on the Department’s Creative Industries task-force, contributing to the state’s Strategic Plan for the NSW Creative Industries.

Irene is a graduate of the Regional Institute of Performing Arts (RIPA) with Distinction, and has a Bachelor of Theatre Studies from UNE. She contributes to the TNN Well-Being Forum Working Group and presented Well Being Strategies for Sole Traders at the Industry forum for Performing Artists, How Can The Show Go On?

Irene co-founded Magic Electricity Box in December 2016, to deliver S.a.a.S (SONGWRITING as a Service) music publishing projects. Magic Electricity Box is a social enterprise that helps to preserve and protect endangered Indigenous Languages. The company creates and licenses content for high-quality Children’s entertainment and literacy tools, guided by an ethical framework informed by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Magic Electricity Box has an innovative education platform and mobile recording studio, which has been shortlisted for an Innovation award for Northern Inland Innovation Awards, administered by Regional Development Australia.

Irene is a passionate advocate for equality and diversity in the creative industries particularly the music industry, and when she is not running the company or rehearsing her Sheila Knacquers character, she is hanging out with her border collie, Duke, and the family.

Performance History:

Irene Lemon trained in Meisner performance technique, augmented by a series of Meyerhold professional development masterclasses and a street theatre and puppeteering background, with preference towards Basel mask. Irene is also skilled in physical theatre, and has trained with many national and visiting international professional artists including Guilliaume Barriere (Chasing Chaplin), Footlights Theatre Company (Newcastle NSW) and the Australian based theatre company Zen Zen Zo, learning Butoh inspired physical theatre.

Irene has toured regional and remote communities in NSW, singing and performing in multi-artform productions in small halls and community venues. She has devised audio theatre and A.V screen and physical theatre mixed-performances and puppet shows for children, music inspired theatre work for adults and comedy for pub dwellers and festival attendees.
