Hours: 

The course leads students to a deeper understanding of Islam in Africa in its historical and current settings. 

By the end of the course, the student will be able to: 

• identify the earliest contacts of Islam with Africa, 

• illustrate the distribution of Islam and the main cultural zones of Islam in Africa, 

• show the main phases of Islamic expansion in Africa, 

• analyze the history of Islam in Africa from the Pre-colonial period to the post-colonial period, 

• identify and discuss the agents of the spread of Islam in Africa. 

Diversity of Muslims in Africa; Influence of Islam in Africa, especially in East Africa; History of Islam in Africa: pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial periods; Importance of the Muslim Sufi brotherhoods; Christian - Muslim interactions in East Africa; The present revivalism: its origin; Islam and modernity; Muslim institutions in East Africa.
