The Madison Junior School 7th and 8th Grade Band curriculum is designed to continue the music education learned from the Madison Elementary Schools through the 6th Grade Band. Students will progress on their individual instruments in small group lessons and in band through 4 skill levels: Baseline, Developing, Proficient and Advanced. The average 8th grade band member’s progress will focus on moving from the Proficient to Advanced level.
The Madison Junior School 7th and 8th Grade Chorus curriculum is designed to build upon the skills learned at the elementary and 6th grade level. The intent of the program is to introduce and expose students to all aspects of vocal music, providing a forum in which they will learn to participate in, observe, critique, and appreciate the different styles of vocal music. The Madison Junior School Chorus is designed to allow each student to progress as a musician and achieve musical independence. Students build upon previously learned musical concepts and knowledge regarding note reading, pitch, melody and rhythm, and other aspects of vocal music performance
Craft Studio is a semester-long art elective offered only to 8th-grade students. The course is designed for students who enjoy making things, and there is an emphasis on craftsmanship and end-product throughout the semester. A variety of materials are presented to students in the context of specific craft projects. Traditional studio art concepts such as line, color, texture, form, and pattern are covered, but more in the vein of how artisans make use of these concepts in the overall design of their crafts.
Drawing and Painting is a semester-long art elective for 8th- graders that is designed to build upon the previous Junior School art cycles and provide a strong foundation for the more rigorous elective art program offered at Madison High School. Students are given assignments intended to stretch their technical skills in both drawing and painting. As they explore the use of different media to complete these assignments, students are encouraged to focus on two main areas of study: composition and shading.
A elective course that aims to teach students about making and understanding music in the modern era. Students will learn how to create sound and music using digital audio workstations, record podcasts, and compose music for film and video games.
The eighth grade health cycle is designed to help students acquire the knowledge and skills they need to make responsible choices in the areas of human sexuality and drug abuse prevention. Topics covered include functions of the male and female reproductive systems; pregnancy, childbirth, and prenatal development; methods of contraception; and sexually transmitted diseases. The difficulties facing teenage parents are emphasized. Additionally, the dangers of drug abuse including alcohol and tobacco, are taught in this course.
In ID8, students are the creators. Through this hands-on design course, we consider how the products we buy and use everyday are made. Why are things created the way they are? What decisions do designers and engineers make as they create products to improve our everyday lives? Through ID8, students will learn how to utilize modern software and manufacturing systems to innovate their own unique solutions to improve their day to day lives!
Code is everywhere. We rely on code for our phones, computers, and technology we use every day, but even things like our light switches or air conditioning often need code to run. In the Inter-Prog course, students will learn javascript-based programming languages that cover a wide-spectrum of coding applications in the real-world. Projects and applications covered are: Animations, web design, applications, video games, robotics, electronics, smart-home appliances, automated machines, and much more! Through this course, students will get hands-on with code as they learn to create the things we see an use everyday!
An elective course that teaches students how to perform on stage and in front of others. Students will play actor’s games, read plays, learn to improvise onstage, and improve public speaking skills.
The Madison Junior School 7th and 8th Grade Orchestra curriculum is designed to build upon the skills learned at the 6th grade level. Students will progress on their individual instruments in small group lessons and as members of the orchestra through 4 skill levels: Baseline, Developing, Proficient and Advanced. The average 7th and 8th grade orchestra student’s progress will focus on moving from the Proficient to Advanced level.
The Madison Junior School Physical Education Curriculum seeks to provide each student with the necessary skills and experiences to achieve optimal wellness and success. The curriculum exposes students to a wide range of fitness based games and activities, team and individual sports, and lifetime recreational and leisure activities. This exposure will enhance their ability to achieve an optimal fitness level as well as have the skills and knowledge to engage in lifelong fitness.
