The Madison Junior School 7th and 8th Grade Band curriculum is designed to continue the music education learned from the Madison Elementary Schools through the 6th Grade Band. Students will progress on their individual instruments in small group lessons and in band through 4 skill levels: Baseline, Developing, Proficient and Advanced. The average 7th grade band member’s progress will focus on moving from the Developing to Proficient level.
The Madison Junior School 7th and 8th Grade Chorus curriculum is designed to build upon the skills learned at the elementary and 6th grade level. The intent of the program is to introduce and expose students to all aspects of vocal music, providing a forum in which they will learn to participate in, observe, critique, and appreciate the different styles of vocal music. The Madison Junior School Chorus is designed to allow each student to progress as a musician and achieve musical independence. Students build upon previously learned musical concepts and knowledge regarding note reading, pitch, melody and rhythm, and other aspects of vocal music performance
Cycle Art 7 is a required semester-long art program that builds upon the sixth-grade art experience at the Madison Junior School. The semester is shaped by a heavy emphasis on drawing - both as a medium in itself, as well as a precursor to painting and other art activities. Old Masters such as DaVinci, Rembrandt, Matisse, and Disney are introduced as artist “role models” for students to emulate as they study self-portraits and simple animation. Students read about Rembrandt and analyze his self-portraits before they attempt to draw their own. They also become acquainted with The Mona Lisa by creating a value study of Da Vinci’s masterpiece.
An elective course that aims to teach students the basic elements of guitar. Students will learn proper guitar techniques, chords, and notes for all six guitar strings. Students will also learn about popular music from the past and present, and how to write their own music.
The 7th grade health curriculum is designed to provide the middle school student with experiences in wellness, in an effort to promote optimum physical, mental, emotional, and social development. The topics studied include personal and social development; eating disorders; mental health and stress management; violence prevention with an emphasis on bullying; health services and careers and first aid. The health curriculum is aligned with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and is taught to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to live a healthy lifestyle.
In ID7, students will continue to understand how an engineering design process is used to not only solve problems, but also create the products we use and rely on everyday! In this hands-on course, students will have the opportunity to expand their understandings of prototyping as they learn the basics of woodworking and materials processing to fabricate bigger creations, all designed by them! This course will allow students to work collaboratively as they face real-world challenges to design prototype solutions to solve our everyday problems in the makerspace.
An elective course that teaches students how to perform on stage and in front of others. Students will play actor’s games, read plays, learn to improvise onstage, and improve public speaking skills.
The Madison Junior School 7th and 8th Grade Orchestra curriculum is designed to build upon the skills learned at the 6th grade level. Students will progress on their individual instruments in small group lessons and as members of the orchestra through 4 skill levels: Baseline, Developing, Proficient and Advanced. The average 7th and 8th grade orchestra student’s progress will focus on moving from the Developing to the Proficient Level
The Madison Junior School Physical Education Curriculum seeks to provide each student with the necessary skills and experiences to achieve optimal wellness and success. The curriculum exposes students to a wide range of fitness based games and activities, team and individual sports, and lifetime recreational and leisure activities. This exposure will enhance their ability to achieve an optimal fitness level as well as have the skills and knowledge to engage in lifelong fitness.
