The Madison Junior School 6th Grade Band curriculum is designed to continue the music education learned at the Madison Elementary Schools. Students will progress on their individual instruments in small group lessons and in band through 4 skill levels: Baseline, Developing, Proficient and Advanced. The average 6th grade band member’s progress will focus on moving from the Baseline level to the Developing level in the following areas: Physical Skill Set (those skills necessary to perform on their instrument), Musicianship Skill Set (rhythm, aural skills, music literacy, ensemble performance) and Artistic Skill Set (musical expression, historical perspective, evaluation).
The Madison Junior School 6th Grade Chorus curriculum is designed to build upon the skills learned at the elementary level. The intent of the program is to introduce and expose students to all aspects of vocal music, providing a forum in which they will learn to participate in, observe, critique, and appreciate the different styles of vocal music. The Madison Junior School Chorus is designed to allow each student to progress as a musician and achieve musical independence. Students build upon previously learned musical concepts and knowledge regarding note reading, pitch, melody and rhythm, and other aspects of vocal music performance.
Grade 6 Art is a required semester-long art program designed to build a transition from elementary school art to the early adolescent art of the Junior School. Drawing, painting, and sculpting are presented, and students are exposed to a wide variety of media. Classroom time is devoted to hands-on art production in a serious studio setting, with occasional references to art history woven in. And although each assignment is evaluated and graded, students are encouraged to embrace the concept of personal self-expression as they create their own art.
The 6th Grade Health Education Curriculum is designed to teach students the information and skills they need to become health-literate, to maintain and improve health, prevent disease, and reduce health-related risk behaviors. Through this curriculum, students will develop critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills. In addition, the students will demonstrate good character and behaviors that promote a healthy community, nation, and world. The health lessons are intended to be clustered and taught during the breaks between the various science modules.
In ID6, students are challenged to think creatively as they work to solve everyday problems. Through this Technology, Engineering, and Design based course, students will have the opportunity to continue the fundamentals of their K-5 STEAM classes as they get hands on with machines and resources in the MJS Makerspace. Through the engineering design process, students will design, fabricate, test, and evaluate prototype solutions to the same challenges our professional scientists, designers, and engineers face everyday!

The Madison Junior School Physical Education Curriculum seeks to provide each student with the necessary skills and experiences to achieve optimal wellness and success. The curriculum exposes students to a wide range of fitness based games and activities, team and individual sports, and lifetime recreational and leisure activities. This exposure will enhance their ability to achieve an optimal fitness level as well as have the skills and knowledge to engage in lifelong fitness.
