Though trick or treating started in the early 1930s, trick or treating with candy didn’t become well known until the 1950s.
When trick or treating first started, kids were handed homemade goodies like cookies or popcorn balls. Because of World War ll people had been rationing sugar. When that ended in the 1950s, lots of candy manufacturers started promoting pre-wrapped candy as a convenient, safe, and affordable treat for trick-or-treating.
Pretty soon those candies took over as the standard making commercial candy the expected treat by the 1970s.
Over the decades many different types of candy have been created and loved. At LMS, students voted on their favorite candy to receive during Halloween, and here are the results.
The most popular candy in school is Sour Patch Kids. 289 students at LMS chose this candy as their favorite. In the 1970s, Frank Galatolie created the candy that would become Sour Patch Kids.
