The resume and cover letter are the very first items a future employer will see that represent you. It is not hyperbole to say that one can never make a second first-impression. The resume and cover letter are an opportunity to establish, in the eyes of the employer, that you are the best person for the job. They are an indication that your motivation for employment is high, that you understand attention to detail, and that you produce quality work.
Look up examples of cover letters and resumes to get a feel for what they should look and sound like. There is also an example at the bottom of this page.
