Inspired by Chuck Close and Matt Doust, my figurative graphite drawing Contrast symbolises the ability to transcend and move into the future. This is depicted through harsh shadowing on my friend Scarlett’s cheeks and arms, juxtaposed against the bright light on the top of her face. Dramatic tonal contrasts on the body were deliberate to highlight moving from adversity to lighter times. I utilised charcoal and graphite to create lifelike representation and communicate the ‘transcendence'.
