Math & Stats

Online Learning Centre

The Math and Stat Online Learning Centre provides assistance to students who are encountering difficulties in any 1xx or 2xx level mathematics or statistics class. The help is offered live, on a drop-in basis, using Zoom or Blackboard Collaborate. Instructor availability can be found under the Schedule tab. Questions may also be asked on Piazza, see the Piazza tab for details.

Rules and Expectations

  • Upon entering the virtual help room, in the designated chat area, state your: name, arrival time, and class number.

  • Be specific about the question for which you are seeking assistance and be prepared to share it with your instructor, for example, by sharing your screen, or by uploading a file or picture.

  • Show the work you have done so far or what you have attempted, and try to articulate where you are getting stuck or what you do not understand about the problem.

  • Do not expect the person helping you to simply solve the entire question for you. Their role is help you understand the underlying concepts and suggest a path forward so you can solve the problem yourself.

  • Depending on the number of students seeking help, the instructor may only be able to help you with a single problem, so they can move on to help the other students in the waiting room. If you need additional help, your questions can be addressed at a later time.

  • OLC instructors are not expected to have readily available answers to all problems in every class. If they are unable to help with an individual question, you can seek assistance from your lecture instructor.

  • Offensive behaviour towards OLC instructors or other students is not tolerated and will result in your expulsion from the virtual room.

  • Neither instructors nor students are permitted to record meetings.
