Kirsten Sorensen

Artist biography

While studying at MacEwan, Kirsten acted as the Secretary on the executive team of the MacEwan Fine Arts Club during her first year of her program. Prior to 2017, she served as a volunteer for a church quilt group for several years and was mentored by a professional seamstress for many years to follow, providing her a foundation in fabrication and textiles.

Her artwork has been displayed at the Arden Theatre on multiple occasions, and an artwork exhibited at The Collective in 2016 was selected for and placed in the St. Albert 50 year time capsule. This Capsule was set in a sculpture titled “Bequest” created by Edmonton artist Sandra Bromley and is due to open on January 14th, 2066. In 2018, she worked on a collaborative installation project for the St. Albert Art Gallery in which she was the creative lead alongside an additional artist.

Artist statement

My current art practice revolves around personal reflection and discovery primarily through acrylic painting, charcoal and graphite drawing, and mixed media. My thematic interests include consumerism, environmentalism, and materiality which often reflects through nature imagery as my subject matter. In the past, I have focused on the technical aspects of art making, though I have increasingly begun to be interested in exploring and incorporating a looser approach to rendering techniques and paint application in an effort to focus on the subject matter, meaning, and effect of a work. As for subject matter, I am interested in developing my portraiture skills while learning to create a convincing portrait more efficiently, both the time it takes to create and the amount of mark making needed to describe a figure.

Growing up in a musical household, self-expression through creativity was introduced early into my life. Currently I am focusing on Fine Art, but music will always be an essential part of my identity and plays a large part in my artistic process. After studying for two years at MacEwan University in the Fine Art Program, I hope to continue to explore and create through painting and video media. Exploration is fundamental at this stage in my art practice as I discover who I am through my art and what it has to contribute to society.
