Rebecca Klotz

Artist biography

Rebecca Klotz is painter and film photographer based in Edmonton, Alberta. She grew up in St. Albert and is currently in her second year, second semester at MacEwan University in the Fine Arts program.

Throughout her two years at MacEwan, Rebecca has grown and developed many skills as an artist. She has created many paintings and sculptures, but her favourite and most achieved piece was a collaboration with a fellow peer. The piece was for a class, but was later submitted for MacEwan University's Ending Sexual Violence Awareness Week forum. The pair got great recognition for being the first two First Year students as well as the first ever Fine Art students to apply. That was something important for Rebecca as a growing artist.

Prior to that, she completed the IB Art program at her high school, St. Albert Catholic High School, in 2018 and had many of her works displayed at the St. Albert Art Gallery and Edmonton City Hall.

Artist statement

My art practice consists of painting, photography, and sculpting. I prefer to work with acrylic and oil paint, and only just started getting into sculpting. Being in art school has allowed me to learn and experiment with a lot of different mediums and forms. I was able to find what I truly love and what I truly dislike. My work is centered around the body, culture, and identity. I find my art-making ideas to be changing all the time, depending what I am excited and passionate about in the moment. I find it very helpful to use different life experiences to help guide and inspire me and my work.

I was able to explore my photography practice a lot throughout quarantine. I have always been interested in taking pictures and being a photographic model. I picked up a few old film cameras and instantly fell in love. From the graininess to getting the film developed, the whole process really excites me and makes me love photography even more. Film has also intrigued me, which I think is why I gravitated to film photography instead of digital.

Painting is an art form of mine that I have stuck to the longest. I have found my techniques have gotten a whole lot stronger from school and it has allowed me to take the information I was taught and apply it to my work. I would say my creative work mostly consists of painting. I really enjoy being able to be very hands on when creating work. I love getting my hands dirty and being able to make a mess of work. I use my lived experiences to help inspire me and my work, and these experiences inspire me the most.
