Artist statement

Their work focuses on the intersections of family, politics, identity and spirituality. They spend most of their time questioning the systems of oppression and making works that extend that question to the audience. They have a particular interest in polarization, radicalization, and iconified political figures and theories. They also explore how their gender identity and their upbringing clash. As someone assigned female at birth, their relationships with their body, family, and community are complicated.

A mentor of great importance to Charlie is their mother. Raised in a powerful matriarchy, Charlie was lucky enough to have been raised in a house where binary gender wasn't an obstacle to success. But as a non-binary person, they feel lost. They explore this dynamic of mother and child, matriarchy and patriarchy, and what that means for them as a potential future parent and partner. They explore mediums freely, working in all manner of mediums from painting, drawing, and sculpture to video, animation, and performance.
