Desolation Backpacking

Friday-Sunday, September 16th-18th

Leslie Beach ‘04 and Edinson Lopez Flores

Desolation Wilderness: 130 Alpine lakes set in granite and among red firs and lodgepole pines in a little under 100 square miles, inhabited by chipmunks, pikas, and bald eagles, wrapped in crisp mountain air. We will take advantage of the lingering long evenings of fall to peel out at the beginning of lunch on Friday-- missing your F block class-- to drive about 4 hours to Wrights lake, then hike about 4 miles up to Maude Lake. We'll make camp-- possibly bringing hammocks-- and eat a simple dinner before falling asleep under Sierra stars and a waning gibbous moon. On Saturday, we'll pack up and hike another 4 miles to Gertrude Lake. This day will allow lots of time to explore, nature nap, wade in the lakes, and make a more elaborate camp dinner. On Sunday, we'll wake early, break camp, and hike 4 miles back out to the van, returning to MA near 6 pm. While not specifically a beginner trip, this trip is beginner-friendly, so feel free to join if you've never been backpacking before!

West Peak Summit

Monday October 24th (No school!)

Leslie Beach ‘04 and Justine Clifford

At the top of the West Peak of Mount Tamalpais, there's an old military base that's crumbling into weeds and concrete sand. There are panoramic views of the whole county, including the ocean if the weather's clear. There's the lingering burn in your legs after a long climb, and your sandwich tastes so much better after the effort. Justine and Leslie will meet you at MA at 10 and we'll drive you to Lake Lagunitas, where we'll ditch the van and embark on a summit experience. 9 miles and 1700 feet of elevation, so come ready for some real exertion!
