Tepco Beach Adventure
April 22
Dr. Morris & Leslie Beach
Come visit this Bay Area Oddity; Tepeco Beach! This beach in Richmond is the former site of the early 20th Tepco Ceramics Factory. This factory made ceramics for diners, bars, the navy, hospitals, you name it, they made dishes for it. In true Past America fashion, they dumped all their garbage in the ocean, and now the beach is covered with old dishes, cups, figurines, and oddities. Come explore with us and pick up some random/shiny beach treasures for an art project, decoration, a mosaic, or just come for the joy of wandering on a beach and seeing something kind of weird. We'll leave about 15 minutes before the end of C block and be back in the time for the late bus.

WOC Explore Santa Cruz
April 30- May 1
Joann Gatine, Maribel Albarran, Joanna Paun, Hannah Hohle
Every day is a great day to visit Santa Cruz! Come join us as we explore Santa Cruz via surfing, camping, and touring the beautiful UCSC campus. We will leave MA super early (5:00AM!) on Saturday morning, so please plan to get to campus no later than 4:50AM. We plan to return Sunday in the late afternoon. The trip will kick off with a two-hour surf lesson at Cowell Beach with the fantastic Surf School Santa Cruz. After, we will head over to explore downtown Santa Cruz and to gather food and supplies before heading to our campsite. We will spend the night around our campfire where we will have yummy food. Sunday, after a quick breakfast, we will head over to UCSC where we will explore the gorgeous campus on a self-guided tour. Surfing and camping experience are not essential. The cost of the Outing covers the surf lesson, campsite, and all of the meals. The surf school will provide the wet suits and surfboards. You will need to bring a swimsuit, towel, flip flops/sandals. We will be staying in cabins with bunk beds so no tents will be needed but please bring a sleeping bag or blanket and even a pillow if you would like. Also please bring a comfortable pair of shoes as we will be walking around a lot. As this trip is being led by the Young Women of Color Affinity Group, you must identify as a woman of color to attend.

Junior-Senior Solo
April 30- May 1
Leslie Beach, Juliet Dana
Junior-Senior Solo! As this school year draws to a close, are you craving some time to slow down, connect with the wild world, integrate the year's learnings, and set intentions for the summer and the year to come? If so, consider joining Taylor, Leslie, and/or Juliet for this 2-day solo program. Drawing from the practices of Wilderness Quest, we will hold one evening pre-meeting, gather on Saturday to weave our group and select our solo spot, return home late Saturday night to sleep, and go out early Sunday morning. You will hold a 6-8 hour solo you design yourself, then return to our fern-filled redwood forest base camp to share stories with the group. This trip might be for you if you're a senior who'd like to solo but aren't available for Wilderness Quest in June; if you're a junior considering Wilderness Quest next year; or if you feel drawn to this kind of reflective immersion but aren't ready for a full week commitment. Questions? Reach out to Juliet, Leslie, or Taylor..

Bird Banding Outing
May 7
Leslie Beach & Amy Strauss
Are you fascinated by wild animals and the environments in which they live? Are you curious about how people study and research wildlife? Do you ever wonder how it is that we know about bird migration, species declines, etc.? Join us to witness hands-on field ecology research at Palomarin’s bird banding station in Bolinas, where songbirds are (safely) caught, tagged, measured, and released…for science! We’ll learn about bird ecology and field research methods while hanging out in a beautiful spot with wildlife experts. If we’re lucky, we’ll even get to see some songbirds up close - a rare opportunity! Birds are most active in the early morning, so we’ll depart MA at 6:15am to increase our chances of seeing bird banding in action. After our morning at the field station, we’ll explore the nature trails nearby with a special focus on looking and listening for songbirds. We’ll make a lunch and ice cream stop in the town of Bolinas before heading back to return to MA by 2:15pm.
Time: Depart MA at 6:15 am, Return to MA at 2:15 pm
