We'll leave right after school, and decide as a group whether we're feeling a beach sit, a flat wander, or a steeper ascent. Solo hikes and buddy walks, spontaneous botanizing and birding, perhaps some trail singing if we're feeling rambunctious-- the afternoon is full of possibility. The Woodward Fire, located in the Point Reyes National Seashore, started August 18th, 2020, around 2:27pm just south of the Woodward Trail, west of the Bear Valley Visitor Center in Olema, California and about one mile inland from Limantour Beach. The cause of the fire was determined to be lightning. Now, more than a year after the fire was extinguished, some trails remain closed, but some skirting the burn zone have opened up, giving hikers a front row seat to the regenerative processes made possible by wildfire. We'll meet at MA at 9am, drive to Bear Valley, and hike about 9 miles. We'll take this chance to learn firsthand about fire ecology, indigenous burning practices, and refugia-- and also simply enjoy the loveliness of the land and one another's company. Bring your own lunch; we'll provide some backup snacks. We'll aim to back at MA by 4 or 5.
