Teaching and Learning Adventures in Covid: What we learned from teaching online
Presented by: Ei Hlaing and Virginia Cylke
Presented by: Ei Hlaing and Virginia Cylke
Description:
The three main objectives of this session are presenting the pros and cons of the new softwares (e.g., Playposit, Camtasia, Doodly) we used to make lectures more interactive, discussing the ways we branched out (e.g., podcasts, crossword puzzles, Padlet) with the purpose to further engage students, and summarizing the unexpected benefits we gained (e.g., editing skills, conducting oral exams). We will also include students’ perspectives by sharing a video reflection of using these softwares as students.
Embedding interactive quizzes in lecture recordings for asynchronous classes can be done in multiple ways. Ei Hlaing will present on how she used Playposit software to embed quizzes and Virginia Cylke will present on how this can be done by using Camtasia as well. They both will discuss the challenges when it comes to making sure these videos are ADA-compliant.
Virginia Cylke makes podcasts in her social psychology class to increase engagement by discussing contemporary topics in society. Ei Hlaing uses interactive Crossword puzzles and Padlet to allow students to collaborate safely. They both will review the use of Doodly software to make videos; the Doodly videos are great at grabbing a person’s attention as the visible hand draws things out while the teacher narrates. Virginia will discuss the intro/outro she customized for all her lecture recordings and will share her experience of mastering the editing skills using Camtasia. Ei will discuss the Screencastomatic video recording software and its auto captioning skills. Lastly, they will summarize the lessons learned from the experience of online teaching during the pandemic.
Objectives:
To familiarize with the creation of interactive online lectures and its strengths and weaknesses
To discuss the innovative ways to engage students: what worked and what didn’t
To share what the main things we learned from the online teaching experience are
