What does Lynchburg Soccer mean to you? My core values were solidified. Coach Shellenberger was an extraordinary role model and probably had the greatest impact (the mentor) on choosing to coach soccer and chose education as a profession. I've also kept in contact with many friends and teammates despite living a good distance away from each other. Credentials for my field of study were acquired at LC. I learned to write fairly well during my LC experience and I had the opportunity to interact with a diverse student population.

Any advice for current/future LCMS players? Only 5.7 % of high school soccer players go on to play intercollegiate soccer at any NCAA or NAIA level. Enjoy the ride few have the opportunity to experience and embrace the relationships with your teammates and coaches which may last a lifetime. He was a mentor and coach. He won every award that the NSCAA presented. He earned respect from all that knew him. To me, "Coach" is Lynchburg College.

What does Lynchburg Soccer mean to you? LCMS is something I will never forget and is a family to me. They are your classmates, teammates, roommates and best friends. You get to go through many obstacles with them, you get to mature and learn with and from one another as you go. Although some of us grow apart due to distance, careers, life paths etc. it is always the same when we get back together and that tells me it was much more than just a bunch of guys playing some footy.

How has your experience at Lynchburg prepared you for life? With soccer, social life, student government, refereeing and school work, it taught me how to balance and allocate my time. I still maintain a busy schedule and if I hadn't learned how to do it in college it would be much more difficult now.

Any advice for current/future LCMS players? Figure out how YOU work. When you need to study, when you need to workout, when you need to unwind. Get a good balance and learn how YOU get your stuff done.

What does Lynchburg Soccer mean to you? Passion. Integrity. Perseverance.

How has your experience at Lynchburg prepared you for life? When you leave college, there are thousands of people out there with the same degree you have; when you get a job, there will be thousands of people doing what you want to do for a living. But getting the career I wanted required a graduate degree. Lynchburg College provided the stepping-stone for me to get to Virginia Tech. Lynchburg College gave me the foundation I needed for a solid career by giving me the necessary written and verbal communication skills to communicate daily with clients. In addition, my degree made me adept at solving complex problems, which occur numerous times in the engineering field.

Any advice for current/future LCMS players? A championship doesn't take one big, complicated, and difficult decision- rather, it takes a thousand much easier, much smaller decisions. Simply put one foot in front of the other. Repeatedly. Consistently. Becoming a better player/team doesn't take one big decision, it takes a few minutes of quality practice at a time. It takes a hundred little tweaks. As everything in life, take a small step. Do it once, do it well. Then repeat. Consistency gets far more done than intensity.

It's also specifically showed me how to handle the work environment and being able to work with a team dynamic whether it is at work or in volunteer positions in the community.

Any advice for current/future LCMS players? Get comfortable with the uncomfortable. When working out, studying, working to be a better you whether on or off the field, do it to the best of your ability. Embrace the suck. Work for the person next to you. It's not always about you. At the end of the day, don't take any day for granted and brush it off for the next day. Those 4 years fly by and you don't want to get caught up in year 4 saying you wish you could have ___... Be 1% better and trust the process.

What does Lynchburg Soccer mean to you? Lynchburg soccer gave me lifelong friends, brothers in so many cases, and a drive to succeed at whatever I attempt in life. I never went on the field at LC expecting anything other than a win, I strive in my art career to be the absolute best I can be. I never accept second best.

How has your experience at Lynchburg prepared you for life? Coach Shellenberger stressed that a win without honor was not a win, to play in a way that brought dishonor to my teammates, him or my school was unacceptable. I have always followed that philosophy and stressed it with my daughter when coaching her. I try to give back to my students by teaching them life lessons learned at Westover Field with Coach and George Grzenda. I never accept doing something halfway. I am determined, even at this point in my life, to never bring less than my best to whatever task I have in front of me and that is due expressly to Coach and George.

Any advice for current/future LCMS players? Work hard at everything, enjoy every second of your time on that field and in this school, don't blink, the four years are gone before you know it.

What does Lynchburg Soccer mean to you? Lynchburg Men’s Soccer means a lot - memories that will last a lifetime. I am incredibly proud to say I played four years for LCMS. It has given me friends, family, and has helped me grow into the person I am today. I am truly grateful for the experiences and wouldn’t trade a thing other than another opportunity to win a third ODAC and a National Championship. That’s how much college soccer means - there’s nothing like it.

How has your experience at Lynchburg prepared you for life? The experiences I’ve gained at Lynchburg have given me valuable learning lessons and opportunities to grow & mature. The mentality and discipline of balancing school and a sport has helped challenge me to push myself to limits way beyond my comfort zone. The Lynchburg Men’s Soccer family culture and competitive edge has translated into the real world because hard work pays off and it shows over time. And with a close group, you are able to bond and grow with the people that surround you such as your teammates and now coworkers. I have been able to pick up the best habits from my coaches, teammates, alumni, professors, etc. that have all been extremely beneficial for being successful in the real world.

Any advice for current/future LCMS players? Know the name on your jersey and what LCMS culture stands for. It’s a Band of Brothers - whether it’s alumni or current/future players, we all are on the same team. You won’t get the same experience if you go somewhere else - LCMS is special. The amount of support and dedication that goes into this program is unmatched. If you want to compete at the highest level and not only win a conference championship but also have a chance to win a National Championship - this is the place to be. You will not find better coaching, nor a home and culture than Lynchburg Men’s Soccer....period. Continue to build on the success this program has had throughout the years and teach the younger/new guys the Lynchburg way. This program will help you not only become a better player, but most importantly a better person.

What does Lynchburg Soccer mean to you? Lynchburg Soccer gave me the opportunity to play soccer at a much higher level than I had previously been exposed to. But, the real takeaway for myself was the community and family that was created by Coach Yeager and each one of the other coaches I was able to learn from. FAMILY is an important noun that every player at LC understands and provides them with a strong background during and after graduating from such a fine institution.

How has your experience at Lynchburg prepared you for life? The work ethic needed to be a successful student-athlete is unlike any other student experience in my opinion. It helped me with planning, attention to detail, interpersonal communication, and taking care of myself even when things where overwhelming. Coaching is what I want to do, and a big reason for this career path is thanks to Coach Yeager and the culture he has captivated during his time at Lynchburg.

Any advice for current/future LCMS players? Work hard and do not take anything for granted. If you aren't happy with your standing on the team..... FIX IT. Nobody is going to give you handouts during school, or after. You have to actively work to improve yourself and the situation you are in. Your teammates and coaches will only help you achieve these goals. Also, use all of the resources that the College (University) has to offer. The writing center, pass leaders, professors will all do the exact same thing for you to succeed in your intended major.
