Welcome to ELD!

Winter greetings from YB's English Language Development program!

My name is Mrs. Rachel McKagan and I am the English Language Development teacher here at Yerba Buena.

As we continue through this exciting year of learning together, some of you may be asking...

"What happened to the CELDT??"

Usually, by this time of year, students have taken the CELDT (California English Language Development Test) to monitor their knowledge of, and fluency in, English. Last year was the final year of this test, as a new test has been rolled out.

"What is this new test??"

The new test to determine if students are English Learners is called the ELPAC (English Language Proficiency Assessment for California). This test assesses students' ability to Listen, Read, Write, and Speak in English. The test is given in February for existing English learners, and in September for those new to our school.

If a child is already fluent in English, he/she will be determined to be Initially Fluent English Proficient (IFEP) and will not receive services. Those students who need language services will be either monitored within their regular classrooms, or possibly pulled out for English instruction.

"How will my child receive English language services?"

This year, ELD students will either be monitored by me (via communication with their classroom teachers, analysis of RenSTAR/ LEXIA scores, and evaluation of work samples), or directly pulled for English development at a time in their day when they will not miss core subjects. Rest assured, I communicate with the classroom teachers each time students are pulled to be sure they are not missing their main classroom direct instruction.

"What materials do you use in your classroom?"

The district has adopted a new, high-quality ELD curriculum that is fantastic! We are using Fountas and Pinnell's LLI (Leveled Literacy Intervention), along with Words Their Way for English Learners to make literacy fun and engaging. The students and I are thoroughly enjoying using all of our new materials in our classroom!!

I will update this page periodically, so check back to see what's going on in our ELD world!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me via email at: rmckagan@lvusd.org

Here's to a wonderful season together,

:)Rachel McKagan
