Transitional Kindergarten

What is Transitional Kindergarten and what are its benefits?

Although children aren't required by law to attend TK and kindergarten (children 6 and up, however, are required to enroll in school), these programs give your child the experience of being in a school environment and develop the foundational learning-to-learn skills needed for kindergarten (e.g. developing social emotional skills, communication skills, self-help skills) through play-based and developmentally appropriate activities. TK introduces students to kindergarten standards through hands-on learning and instruction. Research has found that transitional kindergarten students have higher literacy skills, such as identifying letters and sounds, and more advanced math skills, such as counting objects and completing word problems, than those who did not go to transitional kindergarten.

Who is eligible for TK?

For the 2023-2024 school year, students who turn 5-years-old between September 2nd and April 2nd are eligible for TK.

How do I enroll my student in TK?

All eligible TK students can be registered at their home elementary school starting January 11th, 2023 for the 2023-2024 school year. Please refer to lvusd.org/enrollment or your school’s website for more information.

What if I want my student to attend TK at a school other than my assigned neighborhood school?

You will need to apply for a School of Choice permit. The window to apply for School of Choice permits is open between November 21, 2022 and February 1, 2023. Please refer to www.lvusd.org/permits for more permit information.
