4th Grade Curriculum

READING

We will be reading these novels throughout the year:
- Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing
- Island of the Blue Dolphins
- Mr. Blue Jeans
- By the Great Horn Spoon
Storyworks will be used regularly for both guided and independent practice.
Big themes in 4th grade reading:
- Making inferences with supporting text evidence
- Main idea with supporting text evidence
- Identifying and understanding nonfiction text features
- Theme

writing

We'll be using the CCC Being a Writer curriculum to guide instruction
A writer's notebook will be used regularly for independent practice and during instruction
Big themes in 4th grade writing:
- Narratives - writing with a hook, parts of a story, conclusion
- Informational - researching and writing content in own words
- Opinion - including multiple reasons with supporting details

MATH

We'll be using the Go Math booklets and curriculum for instruction.
Khan Academy and IXL will be used regularly for independent practice and during Target Time.
Big themes in 4th grade math:
- Multi-step problem solving (including word problems)
- Multi-digit addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
- Fractions - add/subtract, simplifying
- Area and perimeter of quadrilaterals

SOCIAL STUDIES

We'll be using Studies Weekly and curriculum for both guided and independent practice.
Big themes in 4th grade social studies:
- All things California!
  - Early history, missions, ranchos, Gold Rush, transcontinental railroad and so much more!
