Weekly Overview

Week of August 10-13, 2021

Reading (Ms. Dayeh/Ms. Mitchell):

Math (Ms. Barnitz/Ms. Louviere): Students will explore what a math Growth Mindset looks like. We will practice problem solving routines. We will build working relationships with classmates and learn how to have meaningful discussions about problem solving.

Vocabulary- Associative Property of Addition, addend, regroup, sum, array, row, and column

Science (Ms. Barnitz/Ms. Louviere): Students will learn about the importance of our brain and how it helps our whole body function, and will learn some brain-smart strategies for calming down and focusing. We will read "The Brain is Kind of a Big Deal" and learn the role of specific parts of our brains during class sessions, while also building class routines and digital citizenship. Our goal of understanding how our brains work is to create a safe space in our digital classrooms and physical homes so that we can learn. Students will also begin setting up their Science Journals and will take some notes. Vocabulary: Amygdala, Hippocampus, Prefrontal Cortex (PFC)

Math (Ms. Barnitz/Ms. Louviere): Lesson 1: Using Place Value to Round- Students will round two and three digit numbers to the nearest ten, three digit numbers to the nearest hundred, and be able to explain the rounding process. Week 0 Vocabulary: Associative Property of Addition, addend, sum, regroup, array, row, column Week 1 Vocabulary: rounding, estimate (noun/verb), number line, place value Homework: Weekly Math Sheet due on 8/20 Assessment: Lesson 1 - Using Place Value to Round Quiz (8/20)

Science (Ms. Barnitz/Ms. Louviere): Students will review the parts of the brain that help their body. Students will learn that scientists depend on observations (drawing and paying careful attention to their surroundings), asking lots of questions, and writing to understand their environment. Students will sketch a leaf this week as a scientist using all 3 levels of observation. It will be important to understand the difference between art and a scientific sketch. (A scientific sketch is not about making a pretty picture. It's about communicating information.) Vocabulary: observation, scientific sketch, Level 1 observations, Level 2 observations, Level 3 observations Homework: Study Brain vocabulary. Bring a leaf to school in a ziplock bag on Tuesday, Aug 17th for Science sketching. Bring one flower to school on Thursday, Aug 19th for flower project sketching. Students will receive an instructional sheet and rubric for this project in class. (graded) Assessment: Quiz - The Brain (8/17); Pre-test for Third Grade Science Part 1 (8/20)
