Period1: Healthy Living


Welcome! I am looking forward to a fun year. Healthy living involves physical, mental and emotional health. the goal for this class is to provide instruction to help each student know what they can do to improve their physical, mental, and emotional health. I hope to educate minds, develop healthy habits, and promote positive attitudes and behaviors related to life-long health.

Topics will include personal health; mental, emotional, and social health; injury prevention and safety; nutrition and physical activity; and alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.

We will practice journaling, breathing techniques, stretching, and take walks.

  • Every student has the right to be safe and feel safe.

  • Use materials and equipment safely.

  • Follow directions for movement.

  • Listen to rules for safety.

  • Follow instructions.

Consequences for breaking school and classroom rules:

  1. Verbal warning

  2. Loss of points

  3. Detention

  4. A phone call or email to parent/guardian.

  5. Referral to office.

Curriculum

We will be covering a variety of topics. Students will learn about different topics through lecture, guest speakers, videos, and handouts.

Topics will include personal health; mental, emotional, and social health; injury prevention and safety; nutrition and physical activity; and alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.

We will practice journaling, breathing techniques, stretching, and take walks.

  • 1” - 2” 3-ring binder with dividers

  • Loose-leaf binder paper

  • Pen/pencil

  • Highlighter

  • Glue Stick

  • We will also be doing stretching and physical movement activities as they pertain to different elements of health. During those times, students need to wear clothes that are comfortable and they are able to be active in, while conforming to Brookside dress-code policy.

Grading Policy

The vast majority of points will come from daily participating in class.

Grades will be determined by points earned from the following:

  1. Daily participation/assignments/journal (approx. 5 pts/per day)

  2. Quizzes/Tests (approx. 10-20 pts.)

  3. Projects (approx. 10-20 pts.)

  4. Late work will result in half credit up until a week after assignment is due. After that, no credit will be earned.

  5. Cheating will result in a zero (0) and a phone call home.

Grade Scale

98%-100% = A+ 93-97% = A 90-92% = A-

87-89% = B+ 83-86% = B 80-82% = B-

77-79% = C+ 73-76% = C 70-72% = C-

67-69% = D+ 63-66% = D 60-62% = D-

59% and below will result in a failing grade.
