Physical Education/Health Gr. 6-12
Course Description: The goal of our High School/Middle School Physical Education/Health (Gr. 6-12) program at Learning Unlimited Preparatory School is to provide our students with a breadth of opportunities to develop the skills, knowledge, motivation, and behaviors that promote the highest student achievement and a lifelong commitment to wellness centered on a healthy and physically active lifestyle.
The Learning Unlimited Preparatory Schools (LUPS) Physical Education/Health curriculum is a sequential educational program designed to develop and enhance healthy behaviors that influence lifestyle choices and student health and fitness. The core of the program is based on physical activities undertaken in an active, caring, supportive and non-threatening, positive atmosphere in which every student is challenged and afforded the opportunity to be successful. At LUPS our prime directive is to provide every student with a wide variety of physical activities and challenges that will contribute to the development and maintenance of their physical, cognitive abilities while affecting a positive sense of well being. Additionally, our Physical Education/Health students will be provided with the requisite foundation for making well-informed decisions that will empower them to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Furthermore, across the course of study, our students will have the opportunity to participate in team sports, recreational activities, cardiovascular endurance training, strength development, and flexibility exercises.
The classroom-based Health component of this course is designed to assist our students in obtaining accurate information, while developing lifelong positive attitudes and behaviors, and making wise decisions related to their personal health and overall wellness. The course of study will include personal and community health; mental, emotional, and social health; injury prevention and safety; nutrition and physical activity; alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; growth, development, and sexual health. Central themes are the acceptance of personal responsibility for lifelong health, respect for and promotion of the health of others, an understanding of the process of growth and development, and informed use of health-related information, products, and services.
Physical Education Standards. LUPS students will learn to:
Standard 1: Demonstrate competency in many, and proficiency in a few, movement forms from a variety of categories.
Standard 2: Identify, analyze and evaluate movement concepts, mechanical principles, safety
considerations and strategies/tactics regarding movement performance in a variety of physical
activities.
Standard 3: Participate regularly in physical-activity.
Standard 4: Develop and implement a personal fitness program to achieve and maintain a
health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
Standard 5: Exhibit responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical-
activity settings.
Standard 6: Value physical-activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social
interaction.
Health Education Standards. LUPS Students be exposed to materials concerned with:
1. Core Concepts- Community and consumer health - the ability to comprehend concepts related to health
promotion and disease prevention;
2. Accessing Information regarding environmental health- the ability to access appropriate, useful and
health-enhancing information (using a variety of reliable resources);
3. Internal and External Influences-Personal health, family and social life including the ability to determine
sources of influences: family, peers, teachers, other adults/professionals, media (advertisements,
magazines, newspaper, internet sources, television, etc.), culture, etc.;
4. Interpersonal Communication- the ability to appropriately and successfully use verbal and non-verbal,
active listening skills;
5. Decision Making- the ability to use a process by which problems are well thought out and a health-
enhancing result occurs, includes consequences (positive and negative) for actions taken;
6. Goal Setting- the ability to set and achieve reachable short and long term health enhancing targets;
7. Self-Management- the ability to make self-enhancing health decisions;
8. Advocacy- the ability to “advocate” for health-enhancing services, policies, programs, assistance, etc.
