Watercolor
3rd & 4th Grade
Anderson & Coston
Students combine art and STEM while creating a frozen landscape. Watercolor, salt and various techniques are used to explore the principles of absorption, repellency and resistance. The painted snowmen reflect art lessons of shaping a weighted sphere and of capturing personality.
Paint Pour
4th Grade
Brookhollow & Coston
STEM and art activities come together. Clay half spheres are created as planets and flat canvas boards are recast as outer space when a popular paint pour technique is utilized. The scientific principles of relative density, adhesion and cohesion are explored in the creation of patterns and color in paint.
Mixed Media
2nd Grade
Burley, Dunbar, Herty,
Kurth & Trout
Second graders illustrate creatures in these works. The tigers and butterflies are lesons in symmetry. The mixed media animals are drawn directly from 3-dimensional toys and placed in an abstract habitat, while the watercolor creatures are an exercise in creativity.
Acrylic Paint
5th Grade
Brookhollow & Slack
The bold shapes and textures of a city reflected in the water are shown in these contemporary art works. These fifth grade artists applied paint with pieces of cardboard instead of brushes to create an interesting view of a modern city by day and by night.
Students were given the task of creating robots built out of Legos. The students utilized guides in the Lego Wedo iPad app to follow the steps in building the robot. Students had to analyze the diagrams and use problem solving skills to accurately create the robot to building specifications. Once the robot was built, the students used the iPad to drive the robot and perform tasks.
Young Scholars utilized Sphero robots and coded the robots to travel through obstacle courses. The Young Scholars had to collaborate and design the course using math and critical thinking skills. When they were done coding, they utilized iPads and Google Expeditions to travel around the globe and visit iconic places such as the Great Wall of China, the Statue of Liberty and the Great Pyramids.
Students were given the task of utilizing different iPad apps to take photos of their progression through a coloring sheet. Students learned about angles and scale in photography, editing photos (cropping, adjusting the angles, etc.), compiling photos in apps such as DoInk and Movie Maker, creating a video from still images and adding music and text to their completed videos.
