Token Economies are essentially reward systems used to reinforce task completion for children who struggle with motivation or noncompliance. Tokens are earned when behavior criteria is met, and these tokens are later exchanged for a preferred reinforcer.Â
It is important to use token economies consistently, and to follow through on rewards promised. Setting a schedule for reinforcement is important as well. Some students may be able to work towards a reward earned at the end of the week, while other students may require more immediate reinforcement. Considering the ability level of the student, as well as the difficulty level of the activities presented, are important to consider when developing a token economy.
