LISD Kindergarten Social Studies

Kindergarten social studies curriculum focuses on a study of the self, home, family, and classroom to establish the foundation for responsible citizenship in society. From Kindergarten through Grade 3 students learn about various communities, of which they are a part. These include their family, the school, the local community, the state and the nation. In each successive year students deepen their understanding of why communities are formed, how communities operate, how communities meet their basic needs, how communities interact with the environment, how culture is reflected in communities along with citizenship and leadership in communities. During the Kindergarten year the curriculum begins with students relating their home community with the classroom community. Successive units broaden on the idea of community from home, to classroom, to school, to local, state, national community, and eventually to the world. Students will:

  • be introduced to the idea of the classroom as a community and will learn that rules and authority figures are important in the home and classroom.
  • begin to develop spatial reasoning skills by learning about basic school geography, learn about the daily routines of school and will begin to use chronology to examine the school day and school calendar.
  • learn about physical geography and how it affects the lives of people living in a community and will continue to develop spatial reasoning skills through the use of maps and globes.
  • broaden the scope of community to include local, state, and national entities and will specifically study the customs associated with patriotic national holidays and the cultural heritage that is reflected in national customs and family traditions.
  • study about how communities are shaped by individuals by learning about the contributions of historical community leaders and the current community leaders and will learn about how citizens shape their communities by voting.
  • learn about how individuals have basic wants and needs, how people work jobs to meet their needs and wants, and will also study about the role technology plays in jobs.
