Instruction is centered on Scholastic Reading’s program Read 180. It is a research based program that is student motivating and multi-modal. Students rotate through centers each day including: teacher directed whole group and small group skills instruction, independent reading sessions, and an individualized computer component.

In addition we study several novels. One is usually a work of fiction such as Ghost by Jason Reynolds, The Giver by Lois Lowery, or Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. As part of the 6th grade curriculum we round out our studies with a Holocaust Unit, which is centered on the study of either Lisa's War written by Carol Matas or Behind the Bedroom Wall written by Laura E. Williams.

For writing the class is utilizing Writing Fundamentals units of study by Schoolwide INC. Students practice the writing process using a journal to gather ideas for writing as well as to organize and elaborate upon their thoughts. During the writing process, students conference individually with a teacher which provides them with the opportunity to reflect and improve upon their work.

Students in 6th grade will continue to develop their vocabulary through the study of Greek and Latin roots using Vocabulary from Classical Roots®, and Greek and Latin Roots: Teaching Vocabulary to Improve Reading Comprehension.
