Lesson matrices have been moved to teachers' virtual classrooms.
The teachers and administrators in the Lakeside Union School District (LUSD) have been working to shift our instructional delivery to distance learning and we want to share with you what we have planned.
While our buildings are closed, school continues through LUSD’s Distance Learning Plan. LUSD teachers worked together to develop common, standards-based lessons for each grade level. Each teacher has built a virtual classroom in which the lessons will be delivered. Access to the lessons and the teachers’ virtual classrooms are provided through the Distance Learning Webpage, linked here.
Thank you for your efforts during this unprecedented time. The strain on you as a parent is tremendous. We have taken that into consideration as we have built the lessons and supports into our distance learning plan.
Distance Learning is new for all of us and we look forward to the challenge that this new opportunity brings. Should you have questions or concerns, please contact your student’s principal. Their email addresses are linked on their school website at www.lsusd.net.
Capitalizing on one of LUSD’s many strengths, one-to-one mobile digital devices for our upper grade students, the lessons are engaging and do not require students to work any longer than two and a half hours a day for our oldest students. Students will engage with their teachers either through synchronous (real-time) instruction through video conferencing or asynchronously by students posting and receiving feedback at a later time.
Lower grade students may also access the lessons digitally, providing that they have their own devices and internet access. Those students who do not have digital access, please see “Access” below.
We are in the process of building videos to help parents understand how the virtual classrooms work. These will be posted on the Distance Learning website along with information on how to access technical support from our district’s Information Technology team.
Teachers may be delivering instruction synchronously (real-time) and will be using video-conferencing tools such as Zoom. Teachers have been trained on the safeguards required to keep their classrooms secure and Zoom has upgraded their security settings for schools. In order for students to participate in video-conferencing, parents/guardians must indicate their consent on this Informed Parent Consent form. Please use the form to indicate either your consent or dissent.
LUSD students have take-home devices in grades 4-8. Since the school closures, we have distributed all 3rd grade iPads and have deployed all of our hot spots. We are working with Cox and other internet providers and reaching out to families who indicated that they do not have internet access to help facilitate low cost options. Please contact Teri Cook at tcook@lsusd.net or (619) 390-2600 if you need internet access assistance. Many families indicate that they have technology at home that may be used to access our Distance Learning lessons. Families who do not have access to technology will receive paper packets, distributed at the school sites. The following lessons will be available on Friday of the preceding week during the same hours. Please keep in mind that the printed packets are only for those who require it.
Immersion students will receive performance tasks that are aligned and in addition to the standards-based lessons. Mandarin immersion teachers will post language performance tasks and additional Mandarin learning resources in their virtual classrooms.
Special Education teachers with their own classes created distance learning lessons that may be found on the grade level page of the Distance Learning webpage. Resource teachers assisted in the development of all of the lessons to help with differentiation and access. Resource teachers will offer office hours to support and connect with students. They may also participate in video conferencing.

Speech and Language Pathologists (SLP) will connect with families weekly and make recommendations for each student on their caseload regarding which activities to access. They will also have office hours available to support students with distance learning. Group video conferencing connections will also be offered or SLP’s may join classroom connections.
A folder with Adaptive Physical Education (APE) activities/lessons are the Distance Learning website under Special Education. APEs will connect with families weekly and make recommendations for each student on their caseload regarding which activities to access. They will also have office hours available to support students with distance learning. Group video conferencing connections will also be offered or APE’s may join classroom connections.
A folder with Occupational Therapy (OT) activities/lessons are on the Distance Learning website under Special Education. OTs will connect with families weekly and make recommendations for each student on their caseload regarding which activities to access. They will also have office hours available to support students with distance learning. Group video conferencing connections will also be offered or OT’s may join classroom connections.
