Grade Description, Content and Proficiencies

Welcome to the wonderful world of music! Below is a brief description of what students can expect to learn in different grade levels.

K- Students will learn songs, dances, rhymes and will play classroom instruments like xylophones and hand drums. The curriculum we'll use is John Feierabend's First Steps in Music. This is an approach to music education with the goal that students will be tuneful (can hear and recognize tunes and learn to coordinate their voices to sing those tunes), beatful (can feel the pulse of music) and artful (can experience the emotional responses that music elicits). Students will participate in the afternoon Winter Concert.

1st Grade- Students in first grade will continue their learning with John Feierabend's First Steps in Music curriculum. The children will also participate in the afternoon Winter Concert. One great work that we'll study is Camille Saint-Saƫns Carnival of the Animals.

2nd Grade- Students in second grade will continue their learning with John Feierabend's First Steps in Music curriculum. The children will also participate in the afternoon Winter Concert. Two great works that we'll study are Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition.

3rd Grade- Students in third grade have the opportunity to join chorus which will meet on Mondays in the music room 7:45-8:25. Throughout the year, we'll advance our music literacy by identifying note names on the staff and learning how to read and create rhythmic patterns. Students will participate in the evening Winter Concert and students who also sing in chorus will perform in both Winter and Spring Concerts. In January we'll begin another fun feature of third grade music- recorder study!

4th Grade- Students in fourth grade have the opportunity to join chorus which will meet on Mondays in the music room 7:45-8:25. We'll begin the year by strengthening our music literacy and by listening and responding to several compositions by Mozart. Students will participate in the evening Winter Concert and students who also sing in chorus will perform in both Winter and Spring Concerts. In January we'll begin another fun feature of fourth grade music- guitar study! We'll end the year by reviewing instrument families and Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf to prepare for band in fifth grade.

5th Grade- Students in fifth grade have the opportunity to join chorus which will meet on Tuesdays in the music room 7:45-8:25. We'll begin the year by strengthening our music literacy and by listening and responding to several compositions by Mozart. Students will participate in the evening Winter Concert and students who also sing in chorus will perform in both Winter and Spring Concerts. In January we'll begin one of the most anticipated and exciting parts of fifth grade- the musical!
