Class Description

Welcome to ...Welcome to Upper House Humanities! Upper House Humanities will be concentrating on the ideas of Utopia/Dystopia, WWI, Narrative Writing, The Roaring 20s, The Great Depression, The Holocaust, WWII, Informative Writing, Civil Rights, 1960s-1970s, argumentative writing and current events throughout the 2018-2019 school year. The goals for this course are to better understand literature, our government, history and ourselves. We will use books, images, articles and documentaries to build a deeper knowledge of what happened during these pivotal events. Students will receive feedback on their assignments throughout the units and will have the chance to redo, revise and resubmit their wok to continue improvements. Resubmitting assignments will give students an opportunity to continue moving through the learning scales. They begin with Getting Started, then with more detail will move to Making Progress. After completing the next steps they will be able to reach Basic Proficient. Their next goal is to reach Proficient. Students who wish to expand to Proficient with Distinction will be able to consult with teachers in order to deepen their work and come up with further steps. A student who is proficient with distinction at the end of the course will be able to analyze text structures and ideas, as well as understand and report out on major conflicts in our past and present. Revisions will be accepted until grades are finalized at the end of the year.
