Let's End Cash Bail!

For the Civics Project our class has decided to take on the issue of pretrial detention and the problems associated with a cash bail system.

People are sitting in jail for days who have never been convicted of a crime. They can’t afford to pay the cash bail they have been assigned in order to grant their release from incarceration. And once people are locked behind bars it makes it harder to hold down a job, which impacts their ability to pay their bills and look after their families. They are not a danger to society and are not flight risks. Many have committed low level crimes that even if convicted may not result in much, if any, jail time. So this system ends up criminalizing poverty as opposed to crime. We can’t wait any longer and need to push for a reform on the cash bail system or complete elimination of it.
